A Palm Beach County family foundation has contributed a $50,000 challenge grant to support the new service in this high-poverty region where the majority of residents identify as black or African American and the leading cause of death is cancer. Since the program’s inception nearly one year ago in Delray Beach, it has reached over 1,800 women.

Tax Collector sets date for annual certificate sale Bidders to compete for interest on tax-delinquent properties

FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 30, 2019) – Investors looking for Lee County real estate should go online and get registered now for the upcoming Lee County Tax Collector Tax Certificate Sale. Tax Collector Larry Hart has opened registration for the annual sale of properties with unpaid real property taxes. Registration closes for the auction-style sale on May 13 at 11:59 p.m. and the sale takes place on May 21 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. online at leefl.realtaxlien.com.
Tax certificates represent liens for delinquent taxes, interest and charges associated with the properties involved in the sale. Tax certificate holders pay the delinquent taxes to the county in exchange for the chance to reap interest of as much as 18% per year.
“The auction takes care of tax delinquencies that would otherwise drain resources from the people of Lee County, and it’s a chance to make a real estate investment that could really pay off,” Hart said. “It’s definitely worth checking out.”
Buying a certificate isn’t the same as buying the property, but beginning April 1, 2021, anyone holding a certificate issued in this year’s sale that has not been paid or redeemed can apply for a tax deed to sell the land. That right expires along with the certificate on April 1, 2026.
Each certificate goes to the bidder willing to accept the lowest interest rate. The bidding starts at 18% and progresses downward in 0.25% increments. Any certificate that isn’t bid on will be issued to the county and available for purchase from leetc.com after the auction.
To learn about certificate redemptions, transfers and cancelations, visit leetc.com/taxes/tax-certificates.  To become a registered bidder, go to http://leefl.realtaxlien.com/.

Sullivan State Farm Agency supports fallen officers through fundraiser Road to Hope bike ride honors the fallen, remembers the survivors

CAPE CORAL, Fla. (April 29, 2019) – The Sullivan State Farm Agency strongly believes in three essential principles: family, safety and community. That’s why they’re sponsoring Officer John Jorgensen, who is participating in the Law Enforcement United 2019 Virginia Road to Hope Bicycle Ride during National Police Week.
Law Enforcement United honors the service and sacrifice of all law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty and remembers the survivors left behind. Officer Jorgensen, who has been an officer at the Roseville Police Department in Minnesota for over 20 years, will ride in the physically challenging event from Chesapeake, VA to Washington, D.C. from Thursday, May 9 to Tuesday, May 14. Riders train and prepare to ride more than 250 miles over three days.
Agents Mike and Dawn Sullivan strongly support the law enforcement community and have spent most of their lives surrounded by individuals who live to serve and protect. Officer Jorgensen and Mike are longtime best friends and both of Dawn’s brothers, Joseph Nitti and Dominick Nitti, are retired law enforcement officers. Dawn’s nephew, Thomas Nitti, is currently a State Trooper in upstate New York.
“It’s truly an honor to support our friend Jorgy [Office Jorgensen] in this honorable ride,” Mike said. “Every day, thousands of men and women put themselves in harm’s way to protect and serve their communities. It’s our responsibility to have their backs.”
Similar to the police force’s mission, the Sullivan State Farm Agency strives to help life go right. The insurance agency is supplying Officer Jorgensen with a rain jacket to protect him against any harsh weather conditions during his ride. He will also receive a Thin Blue Line Flag as a symbol of empathy for the families of officers who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
Funds raised for Law Enforcement United benefits The Road to Hope Bicycle Ride, Project Active Armor, Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.), The Officer Down Memorial Page (O.D.M.P.), and Spirit of Blue Foundation. To support Officer Jorgensen’s campaign, visit https://www.memberplanet.com/campaign/leunited/va2019/jorgensen or to follow along during his ride, check out Mike’s Facebook page at @SFAgentSully and Dawn at @SFAgentDawn.

Deadline nearing for Lipman 5K Run for Backpacks Lipman Family Farms event benefits education in Immokalee

IMMOKALEE, Fla. (April 29, 2019) – The race is on to support Immokalee’s children, and time is running out. The annual Lipman 5K Run for Backpacks is May 11, with early bird registration pricing set to end at noon on Friday, May 10. Runners can sign up at bit.ly/Lipman5K. The event, set for 8 a.m. at Immokalee High School on 701 Immokalee Drive, raises money for the Lipman Family Farms Backpack Giveaway on August 3.

Proceeds from last year’s run filled more than 1,500 backpacks with school supplies for Immokalee area students in need. It also covered the cost of 200 bicycles, $3,000 in clothing store gift cards and 100 children’s haircuts. This year, the goal is to provide even more children with the tools of success.

“We all deserve to begin at the same starting line, whether it’s in a 5K or at school,” said Jaime Weisinger, produce director for Lipman Family Farms, America’s largest open-field tomato grower. “This race is about giving children in our community a fair start in life and the chance they need to pursue their dreams.”

Ellerman and Pedro Mateo are examples of what can happen when education is supported. The two teenagers grew up in Immokalee and earned scholarships to prep schools in Boston this year. Both took part in last year’s race, and before the run, Weisinger promised that if they finished in the top five, he would fly them back to Immokalee for this year’s event. Ellerman finished first and Pedro came in third.

“The race makes me feel proud to be from Immokalee,” Pedro said. “Furthermore, the impact of the Lipman 5K allows me to achieve the perspective that any effort to improve the lives of others is worthwhile.”

Lipman Family Farms is giving shirts to every student in the elementary school that registers the most runners as part of the Spirit Shirt Challenge. The event will also include a ceremony to honor the work others are doing to promote education in the community. Golden Apple Award-winning teachers Jill Striz of Village Oaks Middle School and Philip Barton of Immokalee Middle School will each receive a Lipman Golden Tomato — a special award Lipman Family Farms hands out to recognize educators who make a difference.

Those who would like to donate rather than run can do so on the Lipman PayPal page at bit.ly/LipmanDonate. All proceeds go to the backpack giveaway in August.

Visit facebook.com/LipmanFamilyFarms or call 239-657-4421 to learn more about the race and the backpack event.

The Coalition is an advocacy and education group made up of community and faith-based service providers, local businesses, people who are currently experiencing or have previously experienced homelessness, and other advocates committed to ending homelessness. The Coalition works with members to identify potential gaps within our local Continuum of Care.
We recognize that our provider agencies are stretched to capacity and working harder than ever to deliver effective services often with diminishing funding.
