NOAA Publishes Notice of Intent to Prepare Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement for Gulf of Mexico Aquaculture Opportunity Areas

On June 1, 2022, NOAA Fisheries published a Notice of Intent in the Federal Register announcing the preparation of the Gulf of Mexico Aquaculture Opportunity Area Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement. This programmatic environmental impact statement seeks to assess the impacts of identifying one or more Aquaculture Opportunity Areas in Federal Waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

NOAA Fisheries is leading this effort in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Environmental Protection Agency and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management and U.S. Air Force, which will be cooperating agencies on the programmatic environmental impact statement. Other agencies may opt to join as cooperating or participating agencies as the process moves forward.

The Notice of Intent initiates a formal 60-day public scoping period for the programmatic environmental impact statement that will close on August 1, 2022. During this time NOAA Fisheries will be seeking public comments to inform the scope and content of the programmatic environmental impact statement. Public comments can be submitted in writing as well as during three virtual public meetings that will be held on June 8, 2022, June 16, 2022 and July 12, 2022. Information and instructions on how to submit comments can be found on the NOAA Fisheries Gulf of Mexico AOA PEIS website.

The comments received during scoping will play a key role in helping NOAA Fisheries and our cooperating agencies determine the scope of the programmatic environmental impact statement. NOAA Fisheries and its federal partners will use the best available science and feedback from the public – including industry, states, local communities, tribal governments, commercial and recreational fishing organizations, the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council, the environmental NGO community, and other key stakeholders – to determine the number and location of alternative AOAs and the range of aquaculture types and systems we evaluate in the programmatic environmental impact statement.

We would greatly appreciate hearing from you during our public comment period, as well as your assistance in spreading the word to your constituencies about this important opportunity to provide comment and help shape what AOAs and offshore aquaculture development could look like in the Gulf of Mexico.

Please see the link for the Fishery Bulletin for more information.

Scott Fischer Charities presents $60,000 to Valerie’s House

to help children coping with grief and loss

FORT MYERS, Fla. (June 7, 2022) — Scott Fischer Charities proudly helped to raise $60,000 for Valerie’s House to assist with its mission of helping children and families work through the loss of a loved one together and go on to live fulfilling lives. The donation was originally $20,000 raised through the generosity of sponsors and golfers at the 25th Annual Paul Sands Memorial Slaw Dog Invitational organized each year by Scott Fischer and Lisa Sands. Upon learning of Valerie’s House and empathizing with its mission, two additional donors matched that amount, tripling the total donation to $60,000.

“We were so amazed by the generosity of Slaw Dog Invitational sponsors and golfers that resulted in a record-breaking 25th anniversary charity golf event,” said Fischer, founder of Scott Fischer Charities and owner of Scott Fischer Enterprises. “To be able to triple the amount of our donation to Valerie’s House is just incredible and will truly have a greater impact on these children and their families who are suffering unimaginable loss. To know that they are not alone, and that together we can help them through one of the most challenging times of their lives is so important as they try to move forward.”

The vision of Valerie’s House is that no child will grieve alone. With locations in Fort Myers, Naples, Charlotte County, and Pensacola, Valerie’s House is a special place where children connect with one another and learn the tools to heal after they have experienced the death of someone they love, and that loss doesn’t have to limit their dreams. The dedicated staff and many of the volunteers have lived this journey and genuinely want to help children find hope.

“All of our resources go directly to providing a safe place for children to share, grieve, and grow, and that includes programs for the parents or caregivers in the family too,” said Angela Melvin, founder of Valerie’s House. “Our services are free of charge for grieving families, and children can remain in the program for as long as they need. The generosity of the community through volunteering and donations like this make all the difference in the world.”

Fischer and Sands have carried on the invitational tournament in memory of Paul Sands and his legacy impact on the community. What started on a whim as two close friends reflected on the upcoming holidays after a round of golf, has grown into one of the most highly anticipated annual charity golf tournaments. The first Slaw Dog Invitational raised $5,000, and by 2021, $106,000 was raised in its 25th year with proceeds split between three local charities.

Generous donations have helped to consecutively surpass the event’s annual fundraising goals. David and Charlyn Veracka, representing the entire Rockstar Harley-Davidson family, upped the game by donating $50,000 in 2020, and then matching up to the first $50,000 raised in 2021 to help the event set another record.

The 25th Annual Paul Sands Memorial Slaw Dog Invitational was held on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at the Cypress Lake Golf Club.

Scott Fischer Charities

Scott Fischer Charities is a 501(c)(3) organization founded by Scott Fischer in 2007 out of his passion for his community. The organization has raised and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to support causes and organizations such as Blessings in a Backpack of Southwest Florida, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Any Soldier, REIS Scholarship Fund, Junior Achievement, United Way, PACE Center for Girls, as well as countless other groups supporting veterans, children and the disabled. Today, his dear friends Scott Fischer and Lisa Sands continue the event in his memory. It has since grown to be one of the most impactful and highly anticipated tournaments in the area, raising nearly $400,000 since its inception in 1996. Naples Headquartered Dragon Horse Agency opens in Los Angeles, CA

Naples, Florida-June 3, 2022- Dragon Horse Agency, launched in October 2015 in Naples, Florida, by Co-Founders Julie Koester and Patrick Blake Renda, is proud to announce their expansion to the west coast. Over the years, Dragon Horse has grown into an award-winning business marketing agency with clients across the nation and abroad. The rapid growth in diversity of clientele and the range of creativity required to support them at the highest levels drove the decision to launch a new office in L.A.

In the beginning, Julie and Patrick ran the company from the kitchen of Co-Founder and President Julie Koester. They put everything back into the company while not taking compensation. In 2017 they decided to take the leap and secure a tiny single office in the 5/3rd building in North Naples that they shared. In 2019, having experienced tremendous growth, Dragon Horse took another gamble, opening a 3000 sq. ft. office in the Askar Building in Downtown Naples while continuing to add dragons to the team to meet the expanding client list of local, national, and international clients.

Over the seven years, Dragon Horse has continued to reinvest in the company and the community as active participants in all the local chambers, being sponsors of numerous events and charitable causes, and board members of various organizations and educational institutions in Naples and continue to be recognized for excellence and commitment to the community.

Dragon Horse continues its commitment to excellence and investment in the community with a new growth stage; on June 3rd, Dragon Horse Agency opens a new office in the iconic 100 Wilshire Building in Santa Monica, CA, sitting on the Pacific Ocean’s bluffs. It places Dragon Horse Agency at the epicenter of everything creative, marketing, and media-related, and minutes from “Silicon Beach” with Microsoft, Meta, Google, Activision, E.A., SNAP, and close to music, movie, and tv production companies in Culver City and Hollywood. This significant investment for Dragon Horse will come with the addition of staff in its Naples offices to support the West Coast efforts.

100 Wilshire Building is iconic for many reasons. Bandleader Lawrence Welk, well known as a television mainstay in the 70s, was also a serious real estate developer. He put his mark on the built environment of Santa Monica with his 1970s construction of Lawrence Welk Plaza. Within that plaza, Architectural firm Daniel, Mann, Johnson, and Mendenhall created a streamlined twenty-one-story tower with smooth, white metal cladding punctuated by simple horizontal bands of windows. The General Telephone building, named so because the telephone company occupied most of the property, was completed in 1971 and remains a landmark of Late Modern design.

“As a native Los Angeleno who has called Naples home for over 22 years, it is with great pride to be opening Dragon Horse’s west coast office in the city where I was born, grew up, and graduated from the University of Southern California. Dragon Horse Agency’s global headquarters will remain in Downtown Naples. Our Naples team will continue to grow with this move as it supports and benefits the efforts in Santa Monica,” said Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer Patrick Blake Renda.

Mr. Renda continued, “L.A. being the epicenter for the creative world, coupled with Naples’s pool of talented, young professionals, allows Dragon Horse to expand and enhance our platform, offering our global clients the best in talent, product, and services while bolstering Dragon Horse’s unwavering commitment to excellence.”

The Director of “Dragon” Business Development, Robert Kenney, is responsible for spearheading the Dragon Horse Los Angeles/West Coast office. Robert, an industry veteran, brings 20 plus years of professional success to Dragon Horse L.A.

Report wild turkey sightings this summer!

Dear Wildlife Conservationist,

You can help biologists learn more about Florida’s wild turkey population by reporting all wild turkeys you see during your normal daily activities from June 1 to Aug. 31. It’s important we get as many reported sightings as possible during this annual survey. Our goal is over 4,000 reported sightings this year (last year we had about 3,000) and we need your help to achieve that. Get started reporting wild turkeys on your mobile device by downloading the Survey123ArcGIS app or report sightings online

We’re interested in sightings of hens with and without poults (young wild turkeys), and male birds (jakes and gobblers) from all regions of the state, including rural and developed areas. When reporting numbers of poults, be sure to look carefully because young birds may be difficult to see in tall grass or brush.

The Sunshine State is home to a healthy wild turkey population. They occur throughout Florida and prefer open forests and forest edges and openings. FWC biologists conduct this survey each year to learn more about annual nesting success, brood survival, and the distribution and abundance of wild turkeys. Learn more about the FWC’s summer wild turkey survey.

Thank you for your continued support of conservation.

South Florida Newsletter – June 2022

Message from the Interim District Director J. Malcom Richards

Summer is here and we all know what that means in South Florida: Hurricane Season officially begins. There’s no need to panic—if you’re prepared. SBA offers long-term financial assistance after declared disasters, but preparation is the key to not only surviving a hurricane, but also to thriving in the aftermath.

During June, National Safety Month, when people focus on how they can keep their environment safe and free from any danger, we will be giving you the keys to preparing your home and business to mitigate the potential damage from storms.

This summer also marks the second anniversary of the celebration of the Juneteenth federal holiday. “Juneteenth” comes from the date June 19th the day when slaves in Texas were informed that Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation guaranteeing their freedom two years prior.

Specifically, the holiday recognizes the resilience of the African-American community. At SBA we also celebrate this virtue that has enabled small business owners to move through hardships of the pandemic these last two years to emerge better and stronger. The Juneteenth holiday serves as a reminder and reinforcement of SBA’s commitment to equity communities this year to ensure their full access and participation in our programs and services.

June is Pride Month which commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. At SBA, we celebrate Pride Month to recognize the contributions that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender small business owners have made to our economy.
