Daring, provocative and exuberantly entertaining, Cabaret is coming March 25 & 26

March 25 & 26

Barbara B Mann Performing Arts Hall at FSW
Cabaret is a powerful musical set in 1931 Berlin in the shadow of the Nazi rise to power. Focusing on the hedonistic nightlife at the sexy, seedy Kit Kat Klub, Cabaret revolves around American writer Cliff Bradshaw’s relationship with English cabaret performer Sally Bowles.

The club’s master of ceremonies delivers ribald songs that explore the dark, intoxicating, and turbulent life of Berlin’s citizens and expatriates under an emerging Third Reich. Cabaret originally opened in 1966 and won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for best musical and eight Tony awards.

Faith, family and frosting 🎂

A delicious dramatic comedy, set in the present-day North Carolina, that asks the big questions about love, marriage, tolerance and baking. The Cake by Bekah Brunstetter and directed by Stephanie Davis opens Thursday, March 17.

The Cake a comedy by Bekah Brunstetter and directed by Stephanie Davis

“Refreshing and heartening” – LA Times · “A fresh and funny voice” – Vogue

Performances March 17 – April 1 • All is going well for Della. Her North Carolina bakery is legendary and she’s just been cast on her favorite television baking competition. But then, her late-best-friend’s daughter comes home from New York City to ask her to make a cake for her upcoming wedding. When Della learns that Jen’s about to marry a woman, she is forced to re-examine her deeply held beliefs as questions of morals, judgment and family swirl around them all. This emotional and deliciously funny play was created by Bekah Brunstetter, writer and producer of NBC’s “This is Us.”

Staring Dianne Fussaro, Chantel Rhodes, Madelaine Hayes and Scott Thomson.

This production is sponsored by Janet and Bruce Bunch.

36th Annual All Florida Exhibition

Exhibits Now through March 26 • This annual show is the most anticipated of the year. As the name suggests, this exhibition features pieces created by artists working in a wide variety of media from all over the 65,000 square miles that make up Florida. The 36th Annual All Florida Exhibition is generously sponsored by American Art Collector and International Artist.

The Nouveaux Honkies and Robert Bidney Outdoor Concert

March 20 • Bouncing around the country for the last 10 years, the Nouveaux Honkies currently spread their time between East Tennessee and Southern Florida. Yes, some would call them “snowbirds”, but they will declare themselves bi-statual. That’s not a word, but it will be. As far as what one will hear when they perform, they consider it genre neutral. They play songs they wrote and songs they wish they wrote. If you wanna get picky it’s called “mother lovin’, country folkin’ blues.”

FWC encourages boaters to “Spring Aboard” and take a boater education class
Spring has arrived and that means many residents and visitors will be flocking to Florida’s beautiful beaches and waterways. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) wants boaters to “Spring Aboard” and get educated prior to the kick-off of the boating season to make the most of their time on the water. Spring is the perfect time to take a boating safety course before the summer boating season begins.

In 2021, Florida boating accident statistics indicated that 83% of boating deaths occurred on boats where the boat operator had never received boating education instruction. Education is the key to having a safe and enjoyable day on the water.

While not currently required, owners of human-powered watercraft, such as paddleboards and kayaks, are encouraged to take a boating education class as well so they are aware of critical boating knowledge that anyone who plans to get out on the water should have and be better prepared for the risks they might face while boating.

“In Florida, boaters who were born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, are required to complete and pass a boater safety education course. But everyone interested in boating should take a course,” said Maj. Rob Beaton, FWC’s Boating and Waterways Section Leader. “Taking a boating education course is one of the best things you can do to prevent accidents on the water.”

Boaters have many ways to get educated, from classroom courses offered by the Coast Guard Auxiliary and United States Power Squadrons to online offerings available any time day or night. Learn more about boater safety education by visiting MyFWC.com/boating and clicking on “Boating Safety and Education.”

2nd Annual Brews for Blessings raises over $26,000 to fight childhood hunger

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 10, 2022) – The 2nd Annual Brews for Blessings event raised over $26,000 to help support Blessings in a Backpack SWFL’s mission to provide food to school children on weekends. All funds raised will go directly to feeding local children in need.

Brews for Blessings was held Feb. 26 and co-hosted by Millennial Brewing Company in Fort Myers. A large selection of brews were offered at the free, family-friendly event that also featured a special children’s area in addition to food trucks, a silent auction, and live music. At the event, families also learned about food insecurity in SWFL and how they can help feed a child for a school year.

“We are thrilled with the outpouring of support we received at this year’s Brews for Blessings,” said Cecilia St. Arnold, Executive Director for Blessings in a Backpack SWFL. “The community saw the need once again this year and came out to help the children. We sincerely appreciate it.”

During the week, many young students are fed by federal government programs through school meals. A leader in the movement to end childhood hunger, Blessings in a Backpack SWFL ensures these children receive nutritional meals over the weekend during the school year. Every Friday afternoon, each child receives a backpack filled with nutritious, kid-friendly, ready-to-eat items. They return the backpacks on Monday, and each is filled and ready for the next weekend.

A donation of only $115 will provide meals for 36 weekends for one school-age child. Blessings goal this school year is to feed 6,000 school children.

Blessings in a Backpack helps prevent childhood hunger

Blessings in a Backpack serves 5,600 students through 27 school-based programs located throughout Lee and Collier Counties. In these schools, test scores, reading skills, positive behavior, general health, and school attendance have improved dramatically due in part to students receiving the nourishment they need throughout the week and the weekends.

Kids are our future; you can help secure theirs. A $115 donation will feed a child for one full school year. Gifts of all sizes are welcome through the donations portal at https://swfl.blessingsinabackpack.org/ or via mail at P.O. Box 61402 Fort Myers, FL 33906. All contributions are tax-deductible.

About The Heights Foundation/The Heights Center

The Heights Foundation works to build self-sufficient families in the Harlem Heights neighborhood.  The mission is to support education and wellness, promote family and community development, and provide the benefits of enrichment and the arts.  The Heights Center, supported by The Heights Foundation, is a place for Education, Opportunity, and Enrichment.   Heights Early Learning serves more than 80 babies through age 4. The Harlem Heights Community Charter School serves 120 children from kindergarten through fifth grade.

Harlem Heights was originally settled as a rural agricultural community.   Approximately 780 children live in a mixture of single-family homes and multi-family apartments. Demographically, the population is approximately 70% Hispanic, 20% African-American, and 8% Caucasian. The poverty rate for children in Harlem Heights is more than twice the county average, with family income 40% below the county average. Families cannot easily access family support services located in downtown Fort Myers and benefit greatly from programs located within the neighborhood.
