LEE COUNTY, Fla. – The Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau (VCB) held its 22nd Annual Elaine McLaughlin Outstanding Hospitality Service Awards today to honor tourism professionals and their extraordinary customer service and dedication.
The “E Awards” ceremony, held at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort & Spa in Bonita Springs, included more than 700 guests.
Presented by the VCB and The News-Press Media Group, the E Awards recognize Lee County’s hospitality industry employees for going above and beyond to take care of visitors.
Residents, visitors and colleagues wrote 751 nominations for 553 individual nominees. Awards were presented in seven categories:

• Attractions
• Restaurants
• Transportation
• Good Samaritan
• Other services/Businesses

The Honor of Distinction award goes to the overall nominee who best represents the spirit of hospitality in Lee County.
Selected for their exemplary service, here are the top winners and excerpts from their nominations:
Honor of Distinction:
Anne Marie Copelin, Marriott Sanibel Harbour Resort & Spa
From the nomination: This nominee makes a difference in the lives of her colleagues and guests alike. A story was shared with us about a guest at the resort whose son had gone missing. This nominee remained calm, gathered a team, and began the search for the young child. After a long 20 minutes, he was located and reunited with his mother who was extremely grateful to our Honor of Distinction winner.

Allison Wood, Holiday Inn Express & Suites Fort Myers Airport
From the nomination: Thousands of travelers experienced canceled flights due to a variety of factors. The situation became a scary one for us as I am a single mom and disabled veteran, and being in such a situation with my two young boys was terrifying. We contacted the hotel’s toll-free number and were erroneously advised there was a vacancy at this particular location. I am a retired military officer and I have not seen that kind of fast, calm action since I was deployed overseas in combat. As a former commander I would tell my troops that we only truly know we are professionals when we are under pressure and tested. My nominee is a true professional in customer service. She went above and beyond, and she literally saved us that night.

Best Tourism Boss (first winner):
Yevonne Ellerbee, Lovers Key Resort
From the nomination: She never fails to jump in and help any department when needed. She will get her hands dirty by helping housekeeping clean rooms or fold laundry, hands on with checking in guests in the guest services department, and guests always love to see her helping maintenance by skimming the pool in 6-inch heels.

Best Tourism Boss (second winner):
Bill Waichulis, Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina
From the nomination: He fosters a culture and work environment that makes you want to get up and go to work and encourages employees with monthly luncheons, reward programs and an annual awards gala. He also has an open-door policy and invites one person from every department to attend a monthly meeting and share concerns, ideas and opportunities.

Attractions:
Kaitlyn D’Alessandro, Casa Ybel Resort
From the nomination: You can always count on above and beyond customer service. She is creative, engaging, friendly and problem-solving, and she’s great with customers of all ages.

Restaurants:
Kyle Kuhn, The Island Cow
From the nomination: He had a party of 10 people who were celebrating their son’s departure to the military and this nominee, being an Air Force disabled veteran, took a very personal interest in this boy’s future. He rang the bell and announced this boy’s achievements and what his future was going to hold. All our patrons and staff of more than 100 people stood up and applauded. The whole place was emotional as was my nominee, who had a hard time finishing his speech. As the night was coming to an end, the family was so gracious and very moved by the nominee’s recognition for their brave son.

Transportation:
Diane Phillips, Lee County Port Authority
From the nomination: Each and every day she works to reunite the traveling public with their lost items. This nominee can often be seen on a mission in RSW to track down a lost item – always with a smile. She takes care of each individual that enters her office with patience and kindness no matter if their lost item is a trinket or an heirloom.

Good Samaritan:
Michael O’Connell, Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort & Spa
From the nomination: This nominee assists one of our employees, Fred, who has hearing and speech impairments. It is not what he does during the time the employee is at work, but what this nominee does outside of his area of responsibility. Our nominee assists Fred with errands, takes him to dinner once a week and helps drive him places. He offers his time, and many times also funds, to look after the employee, and never asks for anything in return.

Clare Harris, Billy’s Bike Rentals
From the nomination: As I was walking my bike on the Sanibel Causeway, my nominee generously stopped and asked me if I was OK. After seeing my flattened tires, she loaded me and my bike into her truck and took me to the bike shop. I told her that I had no money with me, and she insisted on repairing my tires nonetheless – which she did excellently. She clearly went above and beyond when it came to helping me.

Get hooked on marine conservation with interactive games
As students return to the classroom for the new school year, educators and parents can encourage continued learning with Gone Fishin’ games. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), in partnership with Pubbly, a digital education company, created five interactive games that engage and educate students on marine fisheries conservation. Fall Festival at Edison and Ford Winter Estates

FORT MYERS, Fla. (September 8, 2022) – Edison and Ford Winter Estates will host its first Fall Festival on October 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This family-friendly event will include craft vendors, food trucks, music and several fun activities for children.

Activities include the Banyan Tree Climb, which is sponsored by the Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association. Early registration is encouraged as this activity is expected to sell out. Tickets can be purchased online at EdisonFord.org and are $45 for non-members, or $35 for Edison Ford members.

Families will be able to select and purchase pumpkins in the Pumpkin Patch, with the option to paint the pumpkins (paint provided). Other activities include adult and kid-friendly axe throwing and archery, plus children can get their face painted, or get fairy hair. The Wild Wizards will be conducting science experiments and a balloon artist will make crafty animals. Visitors also will have an opportunity to make their own floral bouquets at the flower truck.

There is no charge to stroll around and listen to music; however, each vendor has a fee to participate in the activities and visitors are encouraged to bring cash. Parking is free in the Edison Ford lots. Admission to the museum, laboratory and riverside of the property requires an additional ticket. Orchid Sale and Symposium at Edison and Ford Winter Estates

FORT MYERS, Fla. (September 7, 2022) — On October 1 and 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Edison and Ford Winter Estates will hold its annual Orchid Sale and Symposium. The event will take place outdoors, under the oak trees and surrounding areas. Multiple workshops will be offered each day and vendors will have rare and unusual orchids for sale. Orchids also will be available in the Garden Shoppe.

A daily ticket is required to attend the workshops ($20 for Edison Ford members; $25 for non-members); the plant sale portion of the event is free to attend. Tickets do not include tours or admission to the museum, lab or riverside of the property. Guests will also have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets each day for a chance to win a rare native vanilla orchid.

A limited number of garden carts will be available; guests are encouraged to bring their own. Food and beverage vendors will be onsite with refreshments available for purchase. Southwest Florida Orchid Society representatives will have information about the society and membership.

Participating vendors including Bello Tropicals, OFE Orchid Supplies, Palmer Orchids, Smiley’s Orchids & Greenery, So Orchids, Sunland Orchids, and Tropiflora will have orchids and orchid supplies for sale. A limited number of garden carts will be available; guests are encouraged to bring their own. Food and beverage vendors will have refreshments available for purchase, and live music will be provided.

The Garden Shoppe offers a unique place for gardeners to shop for quality plants. The Shoppe is stocked with a large selection of ornamentals, orchids, fruit trees, butterfly plants, herbs, succulents, rare exotics and Florida natives. Many of the flowering trees and shrubs in the botanical gardens are available for purchase. Wind chimes, fountains, ceramic flower pots and garden art are also available. A ticket is not required to enter the Garden Shoppe.

Orchids have a long history with the Estates. They were Mina Edison’s favorite plants and she displayed many of them in her garden, attached to trees so they could grow as she saw them in the Everglades. Today, visitors can view many orchid species throughout the 20 acres of botanical gardens. Following in Mina’s footsteps, horticulturists continue to attach orchids to trees all around the site. Edison and Ford Winter Estates
Edison and Ford Winter Estates is the internationally known winter home site of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. More than 220,000 visitors walk through the location each year from all around the globe. The organization has received many awards, including the National Stewardship Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the National Garden Clubs’ Historic Preservation Award. The property is an official project of “Save America’s Treasures,” a Florida Historic Landmark and a National Register Historic Site. The Edison Botanic Laboratory is a National Historic Chemical Landmark. The site is open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and until 9 p.m. during the month of December for Holiday Nights.

How does nutrition affect us as we age?

Greetings, The way we eat throughout our lives impacts the way we age. Science has proven that a well-balanced and varied diet full of nutritious foods is critical to good health.

A nutritious diet can help maintain a healthy weight and proper blood-sugar control, lower blood pressure, manage arthritis, reduce the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease, prevent and slow the progression of eye disease, keep bones and muscles strong, and help support brain health.

Without proper nutrition, our bodies can’t stay healthy, fight off disease, or deal with illnesses that we already have. Poor nutrition weakens our immune systems and leaves us vulnerable to infections, slower recovery, and wound healing. It can cause unhealthy weight changes and muscle loss that can lead to frailty, falls, broken bones, disability, loss of independence, and disease complications. It can also lead to nutrition-related diseases and conditions like malnutrition, sarcopenia, and osteoporosis.

We all have the power to maximize and improve our health, add vitality to our years, and reduce the risk of disease, as well as increase our health-spans — the number of years we live in good health.

It is important to understand that our nutritional needs change with age.

• Changes to taste and swallowing, medical conditions and medications that impact appetite, decreased ability to shop and prepare meals, declines in sense of thirst, social isolation, and other physical and environmental changes can all impact nutrition.

• The ability to absorb vitamin B12 can decrease with age and the use of certain medications can decrease absorption. Eating enough protein and fortified foods, such as fortified cereals, can help you meet your vitamin B12 needs. Speak with your healthcare provider to determine what, if any, supplementation is right for you.

• If you use or are considering taking dietary supplements, it’s important to track and discuss all dietary supplements with your healthcare provider to determine what is right for you. This includes beverage supplements which can be a source of added sugars.

The Great Silk Road: A Caravan of Cultures

The heart of the ancient caravan routes of the Great Silk Road crosses the remote and largely unknown region of Central Asia which stretches across deserts and mountains from Europe to the Far East. Join us as we take you on an amazing journey through Central Asia’s Five ’Stans: Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan.

Apollo Program

In this lecture we will review two missions as well as the Apollo highlight missions – Apollo 11 – First Landing on The Moon and Apollo 13 – Houston We Have A Problem Mission. Apollo 17 was launched in December 1972 and Astronaut Gene Cernan became the last man to walk on the moon. Our lecturer worked on the Apollo Program from 1962 – 1972 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work saving the astronauts of the Apollo 13 crew. Ed Grace will share with us an inside view of the Apollo program.

Roosevelt vs. Rockefeller: Are Corporations Too Big and Powerful?

The Symphony’s 62nd season features a new, yet locally beloved Music Director Maestro Radu Paponiu on the podium, one of classical music’s most celebrated violinists and innovative music by diverse and groundbreaking composers.

The Symphony softly opens its season in October with a TinyConcert – MiniMasterworks, featuring the orchestra’s exceptional professional musicians who will perform the Mendelssohn Octet and Mozart String Quartet No. 19. The Masterworks Classical Concert Series features world renowned guest violinist, Gil Shaham, the return of Sphinx Competition winner, cellist, Thomas Mesa and partnerships with Opera Naples and Naples based Grand Piano Series. The Pops Series has evolved into Brave New Pops; innovative programming where the orchestra co-stars in groundbreaking performances of fusion concerts, multimedia presentations and orchestral arrangements of contemporary rock & roll. The South Florida Water Management District is a regional governmental agency that manages the water resources in the southern part of the state.
