Postponed: Last 3 Meetings to Discuss Draft Rule Amendment Related to Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD)

FWC staff is taking a precautionary step to help curb the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) by postponing the last 3 scheduled stakeholder meetings related to chronic wasting disease (CWD). The postponed meetings are as follows: March 23 in Milton, March 24 in Panama City, and March 25 in Tallahassee.
The FWC already has conducted 5 of the 8 planned meetings to seek feedback on a draft rule amendment, which if passed, would prohibit importing or possessing carcasses or certain carcass parts from all members of the deer family originating from outside of Florida. This rule amendment is being proposed to reduce the risk of CWD being introduced into or spread throughout Florida.
We’ll follow up with more information regarding the status of these postponed meetings. In the meantime, we invite you to share your feedback using the online commenting tool. Learn more about this proposal: https://myfwc.com/hunting/deer/cwd/

Concurrently, across the country, local entrants vie to win ADDY Awards recognition as the very best in their markets.
At the second tier, local ADDY winners compete against winners from other local clubs in one of 15 district competitions. SBA To Provide Small Businesses Impacted by Coronavirus (COVID-19) Up to $2 Million in Disaster Assistance Loans

WASHINGTON – SBA Administrator Jovita Carranza issued the following statement today in response to the President’s address to the nation:
“The President took bold, decisive action to make our 30 million small businesses more resilient to Coronavirus-related economic disruptions. Small businesses are vital economic engines in every community and state, and they have helped make our economy the strongest in the world. Our Agency will work directly with state Governors to provide targeted, low-interest disaster recovery loans to small businesses that have been severely impacted by the situation. Additionally, the SBA continues to assist small businesses with counseling and navigating their own preparedness plans through our network of 68 District Offices and numerous Resource Partners located around the country. The SBA will continue to provide every small business with the most effective and customer-focused response possible during these times of uncertainty.”
Process for Accessing SBA’s Coronavirus (COVID-19) Disaster Relief Lending
• The U.S. Small Business Administration is offering designated states and territories low-interest federal disaster loans for working capital to small businesses suffering substantial economic injury as a result of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Upon a request received from a state’s or territory’s Governor, SBA will issue under its own authority, as provided by the Coronavirus Preparedness and Response Supplemental Appropriations Act that was recently signed by the President, an Economic Injury Disaster Loan declaration.
• Any such Economic Injury Disaster Loan assistance declaration issued by the SBA makes loans available to small businesses and private, non-profit organizations in designated areas of a state or territory to help alleviate economic injury caused by the Coronavirus (COVID-19).
• SBA’s Office of Disaster Assistance will coordinate with the state’s or territory’s Governor to submit the request for Economic Injury Disaster Loan assistance.
• Once a declaration is made for designated areas within a state, the information on the application process for Economic Injury Disaster Loan assistance will be made available to all affected communities.
• SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loans offer up to $2 million in assistance and can provide vital economic support to small businesses to help overcome the temporary loss of revenue they are experiencing.
• These loans may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable and other bills that can’t be paid because of the disaster’s impact. The interest rate is 3.75% for small businesses without credit available elsewhere; businesses with credit available elsewhere are not eligible. The interest rate for non-profits is 2.75%.
• SBA offers loans with long-term repayments in order to keep payments affordable, up to a maximum of 30 years. Terms are determined on a case-by-case basis, based upon each borrower’s ability to repay.
• SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loans are just one piece of the expanded focus of the federal government’s coordinated response, and the SBA is strongly committed to providing the most effective and customer-focused response possible.
For additional information, please contact the SBA disaster assistance customer service center. Call 1-800-659-2955 (TTY: 1-800-877-8339) or e-mail [email protected].

Please Follow Facts, Not Fear - Visit the Florida Chamber Coronavirus Resource Page

The Florida Chamber of Commerce urges Floridians and visitors to follow the facts, be cautious but not fearful when it comes to the Coronavirus (COVID-19). The Florida Chamber is the official state chapter of the National Safety Council, and we are committed to helping keep Floridians safe. The safety of our collective employees is paramount and they deserve the facts.

At times like these, it’s important to remember this is a global situation and misinformation and overreacting is causing a secondary impact on our economy. As I’ve said for years, Florida’s economy may be creating one-in-10 new U.S. jobs but our economy is a fragile balance of innovation, trade, tourism and economic diversification. Our Chief Economist is closely monitoring the situation and I’ll be back in touch on that later. For now, let’s focus on safety and the facts.

Florida is open for business, for travel and for spring break and we are in 24/7 contact with Governor Ron DeSantis’ office, state public health agencies, VISIT FLORIDA, the CDC and other important partners. If the CDC changes their recommendations, we will let Florida Chamber members know immediately. In the meantime, the Florida Chamber is still traveling and performing business as normal AND I KNOW MOST OF YOU ARE DOING THE SAME. In fact, I’m typing this memo from Miami during our national meeting of the top 100 chambers of commerce in America.

I would like to thank all our members who have called to share your stories, concerns and best practices.  This is one of those times when we’re all in this together and the infodemic that is happening as a result of the health concerns is having significant secondary impacts on our economy. Days before President Trump addressed the nation, our Chief Economist, Dr. Jerry Parrish, said, “…don’t panic, be smart.” He may have been the first to say it, but it was true then and it’s true now.

To help Florida Chamber members follow the facts of the Coronavirus, the Florida Chamber of Commerce today released our Florida Chamber Coronavirus resource webpage with information business leaders can use to prepare, both internally and externally, for potential impacts from the Coronavirus. This webpage includes important links from Governor DeSantis’ office, the Emergency Operations Center, Centers for Disease Control, Florida Department of Health and our partners at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and it will be updated regularly.

Share this link with your executive leadership, local business partners, employees and friends.

For speed, and for your convenience, I have appointed Greg Blosé as our point of contact for information regarding Florida’s COVID-19 information. Greg is a veteran of the Florida Emergency Operations Center as he has staffed many hurricanes and served as our point of contact during the Zika virus as well. Should you have any best practices, suggestions or questions, please contact Greg Blosé at [email protected] or call 850-521-1243.

Again, we’re in this together and we will be in touch regularly.

FWC to boaters: Slow down to save manatees.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is reminding boaters and personal watercraft operators to slow down and keep a keen eye out for manatees as they enjoy Florida’s waterways this spring.
During this time of year, manatees leave their winter refuges and are more likely to be found in rivers, canals and nearshore waters. The sunny spring weather also appeals to Florida’s boaters, meaning that they are likely to cross paths with the state’s official marine mammal.
“Spring is one of the best times to be out on the water but it’s also a very active time for manatees.” said Ron Mezich, who heads the FWC’s Imperiled Species Management Section. “Boaters can make a big difference and avoid injuring or killing manatees by slowing down and being alert this spring.”
Some of the same actions that keep manatees safe also keep people safe. Everyone on the water should be paying attention to surroundings and operating at safe speeds.
From April 1 through Nov. 15, seasonal manatee zones require boaters to slow down in certain areas to prevent manatees from being struck by motorboats or personal watercrafts. FWC law enforcement officers are on patrol in state waters to remind boaters of the seasonal manatee speed zones and take enforcement actions when appropriate.
Manatees can be difficult to detect when underwater, so it is important for operators of boats and personal watercrafts to be vigilant while out on the water. You can help protect manatees by following these simple guidelines:

  • Wear polarized sunglasses to help spot manatees.
  • Look for large circles on the water, also known as manatee footprints, indicating the presence of a manatee below.
  • Look for a snout sticking up out of the water.
  • Follow posted manatee zones while boating.
  • Report injured, distressed, sick or dead manatees to the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922) or dialing #FWC or *FWC on a cellphone.

Resources for boaters, educators and other interested members of the public are available at MyFWC.com/Manatee. Click the page’s “Information & Guidelines” tab for helpful tips on respectfully viewing manatees, additional guidelines for boat and PWC operators, and information on what you can do to help these amazing aquatic mammals.
Those interested in supporting the FWC’s manatee research, rescue and management efforts can purchase a “Save the Manatee” Florida license plate, or donate $5 to receive an FWC manatee decal. Both are available from your local Tax Collector’s office.
Spring is an active time for many of Florida’s wildlife species. For more information on wildlife in spring visit MyFWC.com/News and click on “Spring Wildlife News”.
General boating safety information is available at MyFWC.com/boating.

Fort Myers Brewing Company earns 2 gold medals at 2020 Best Florida Beer Professional Championship

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 11, 2020) – Fort Myers Brewing Company won a pair of gold medals at the 2020 Best Florida Beer Professional Championship, a sanctioned competition for the state’s top brewers that helps promote the art of beer-making and the craft beer industry.
The brewery’s popular “Fort Myers Wheat,” one of its seven flagship beers, won top honors in the Wheat Beer category. Described as an “American wheat ale made for our warm Florida climate,” the brew has hints of orange and coriander and a light, but creamy, mouthfeel that quenches thirst.
Fort Myers Brewing’s O.Y.A. also earned a gold medal in the Double IPA category. With a “potent citrus hop character and a prominent sweetness that packs a knockout punch,” the Imperial India pale ale is a specialty beer that’s high on taste and alcohol content.
“Brewing isn’t just a job for our team; it’s a passion,” said Rob Whyte, who co-founded Fort Myers Brewing in 2013 with his wife, Jen. “We spend days, weeks and even months developing our beers and creating products that we know our loyal customers will enjoy, so it’s extremely gratifying to know professional judges also appreciate the flavors we are producing.”
The 2020 Best Florida Beer Professional Championship attracted 931 entries in 55 categories.
Fort Myers Brewing has medaled at the Best Florida Beer Professional Championship every year since the brewery was established in 2013, winning a total of 10 gold, five silver and eight bronze medals. Fort Myers Brewing also won the title of “Best Large Brewery in Florida” at the 2016 competition.
“When we opened seven years ago, we were the first craft brewery in Lee County,” Jen Whyte said. “It has been incredible to be part of this industry as it continues to grow locally and throughout the state, and we’re so appreciative to receive this recognition from our fellow beer-lovers.”
About Fort Myers Brewing Company
