Name: Which Way to the Stage by Ana Nogueira, Directed by Carmen Crussard

Date: Thursday, February 1-Saturday, February 3

Description: A playful yet profound comedy about friendship, ambition and what happens when dreams fall just out of reach. Broadway superfans Jeff and Judy eagerly await their idol Idina Menzel after her performance in If/Then at the stage door every night. But when a sexy stranger enters the scene and upends their decades-long friendship, the musical theater aficionados have to go off-book to rewrite their own finale.

Date: On Display February 2-24, Opening Reception: February 2, 5-7pm

Description: Deb Zwetsch and Zan Lombardo built a relationship as collaborative artists to specifically create the work for this show. They have channeled multitudes together. Harnessing watercolor paints and liquid silk dyes, created by trusting The Flow, with as much enthusiasm and unconditional love and trust as they could muster.

Description: Join us after the opening reception of our February Exhibition, We Contain Multitudes, for a live concert featuring Pipe Dream.This concert is free for AFTA members and $10 per person for non-members.

Name: Intro to 3D Modeling Using Blendr (Ages 10-15)

Date:  Four Saturdays, February 3-24

Time: 10:00 am – Noon

Location: Alliance for the Arts

Description: Using Blendr, the internet’s favorite 3-D creation software, students will learn what Blendr can do, how to use the program and design their very own character or scene in 3-D.nThis class will take place in our state of the art Bloom & Wallace Digital Arts Lab.

Name: Are You Stuck One-Day Workshop

Description: Jan Ellen Atkielski, fine artist and popular instructor will help students get “unstuck” or help to create new works in a multitude of mediums including oil painting with brush or palette knife, watercolor, pastel or acrylic.

Name: F*ckup Nights Vol 4

Description: F*ckup Nights is a global movement focusing on how failure can transform into radical solutions that help people make better decisions and challenge the status quo. Attendees will hear 3 never-before-heard stories of professional fuckups to encourage vulnerability, authenticity, and empathy among all those in attendance.

Name: The Women Who Mapped the Stars, By Joyce Van Dyke, Directed by Todd Sherman

Date: Thursday, February 8-18

Time: 7:30-9:00 pm, 2:00 pm

Description: In The Women Who Mapped the Stars, five women astronomers working together at the Harvard Observatory help to shape the development of astrophysics. All performances will be held at and for the Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium as a fundraiser..

Name: Koru Mosaic Two-Day Workshop

Date: Two Thursdays, February 8 & 15 

Time: 1:00 – 4:00 pm

Location: Alliance for the Arts

Description: The koru (Māori for ‘loop or coil’) is a spiral shape based on the appearance of a new unfurling silver fern frond. Mosaic Artist, Nancy Mayhew, will instruct students how to make a mosaic version of the Koru to create their own beautiful, unique and meaningful piece.

Name: Step-by-Step Batik: Pelicans Gathering

Date: Sunday, February 11

Time: 9:30 am – 4:00 pm

Description: Utilizing a technique that originated in Indonesia called Batik, students will be working with multiple templates on Ginwashi rice paper, using melted wax and watercolor to create a beautiful painting that will boast a fabric-like finish.

Name: Outdoor Bluegrass Concert featuring Swinging Bridge

Date: Sunday, February 11

Time: 3:00 – 5:00 pm

Description: Swinging Bridge Bluegrass Band is a bluegrass and classic country band established in 1997. The five members of Swinging Bridge are Alan Colpitts, Chris Bryson, Doug Rowe, JR Davis and Bobby Martin. Swinging Bridge members are from the Venice area of Southwest Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Name: Zentangle for the Seasons

Date: Three Tuesdays, February 13-27

Time: 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Description: Zentangle is an easy-to-learn method of drawing patterns step by step. It is relaxing, gratifying and a great way to exercise the creative side of the brain. Beginning with the basics in the first class, students will then create a variety of art works throughout the month, based on the season.

Description: Every second Wednesday of the month from  5:00 pm-8:00 pm,AFTA presents a pop-up Night Market featuring a selection of fresh produce, art for sale, live music, art activities for kids, food trucks and beer and wine.

Name: Open Mic Night at Wednesday Night Market

Date: Wednesday, February 14

Description: AFTA presents Open Mic at the Night Market, celebrating local musicians. Guests can enjoy live performances in a vibrant atmosphere. Performers can register online to participate. Basic sound system provided. Limited to one song or 5 minutes per performer.

Description: Families can drop in for free, hands-on fun with art from 10 a.m. to noon. Kids can explore something new every month like art making, gallery activities, games and more – all inspired by artworks on view in the gallery, famous artists, national holidays and artistic traditions around the world.

Name: Friendship Bracelet Making (7+)

Description: Students in this popular drop in class will make friendship bracelets for trading or keeping, all while listening to popular music and making new friends.

Name: Fluid Art: The Dustpan Pour (18+)

Date: Wednesday, February 21

Time: 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Description: Whether a beginner or advanced, these fluid art techniques will be fully explained, demonstrated and students will go home with two completed pieces. Canvas sizes are your choice between 12×12 and 16×16.

Name: Art House Cinema at AFTA: Breaking the News-A Film Screening

Date: Wednesday, February 21

Description: Seeking to buck the white male status quo, a group of women and LGBTQ+ journalists launch a news startup asking who’s been omitted from mainstream coverage, and how to include them. This screening is part of the Southern  Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers. WGCU’s Tara Calligan will be hosting a Q & A session with Heather Courtney, Director / Producer / Cinematographer of Breaking the News.

Name: Dexter the Improv Musical

Date: February 23-25

Description: Jeff Lindsay, creator of the Showtime series Dexter, has teamed up with award-winning composer, Julian Sundby, to present Dexter the Improv Musical. Part scripted, part improv, all Dexter, your favorite good-hearted serial killer. No two shows are the same. Be prepared to laugh, sing, scream and cringe!
