Calusa Culture Night showcases region’s best asset Stories, art, music to celebrate SWFL waterways

FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 11, 2019) — If the water could talk, you’d hear its voice loud and clear on Calusa Culture Night. That’s when the brilliant history of Southwest Florida’s water takes center stage at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center in Fort Myers. Storytellers, historians, artists and musicians will come together for a one-of-a-kind show on Wednesday, April 24, during Calusa Waterkeeper’s Big Calusa Week water celebration and cleanup. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the event runs from 6:30-9 p.m. Reservations are required. Limited seats are still available for $20 online at https://www.sbdac.com/calusa-culture-night.
“To truly understand the intrinsic value of the water that makes Southwest Florida what it is, we need to hear from the people who know it best,” Calusa Waterkeeper John Cassani said. “The gifted speakers and entertainers at Calusa Culture Night will give us all a new appreciation for what we have right here in our own backyard.”
Speakers include fifth-generation Fort Myers resident Woody Hanson, third-generation Sanibel native Ralph Woodring, Seminole Tribe member Brian Zepeda, Randell Research Center Coordinator Cindy Bear, The News-Press journalist and historian Amy Bennett Williams, and lifelong environmentalist and educator Dr. Bill Hammond. Cassani will also present, and the electric-acoustic duo Roots 2 Vine will premiere a song written for the occasion called “The Big Calusa.”
All of it will take place in front of a Seminole dugout canoe on display along with water-themed works of art by prominent Naples-based painter Paul Arsenault and noted Sanibel artist Myra Roberts.
“The talented individuals we have gathered under one roof for this exceptional evening of water culture tell us we were perhaps better stewards of the water at one time than we are today,” said Calusa Waterkeeper Executive Director and creator of The Big Calusa, KC Schulberg.  “On Wednesday, we will listen and learn. Future generations are counting on us to get this right.”
Sponsorship opportunities are available. Email Schulberg at [email protected] to find out how to get involved. For the latest on The Big Calusa, go to calusawaterkeeper.org/bigcalusa or follow Calusa Waterkeeper on Facebook at facebook.com/calusawaterkeeper.

Lee County Bar Foundation golf tournament to benefit Southwest Florida nonprofits

Local attorneys, judges seek golf partners for charity
Lee County Bar Foundation tournament benefits SWFL nonprofits
FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 9, 2019) – Attorneys, judges and golf enthusiasts are coming together for a good cause. The public is invited to join Lee County Bar Association members for 18 holes plus contests, prizes, breakfast, lunch, refreshments and live and silent auctions at the annual Lee County Bar Association Foundation Charity Golf Tournament. The funds raised at the event on Saturday, May 4 at The Forest Country Club’s famed Bear Course will benefit several Southwest Florida charities that receive aid from the foundation.
“You get to hit the links and help the community at the same time,” said attorney Ken Jones, co-chair of the event. “There’s no better way to spend a Saturday.”
Last year’s tournament raised $22,000, and foundation proceeds benefited more than a dozen local organizations dedicated to aiding children, like the Guardian ad Litem Foundation, feeding the hungry, like the Harry Chapin Food Bank, healing the sick, like Partners for Breast Cancer, and more.
Check-in gets underway at 7 a.m., and the four-player scramble begins at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Putting, long drive and closest-to-the-pin contests will take place within the round, as will several other opportunities to win prizes.
A light breakfast and coffee will precede tee time, with players welcome to visit attorney Brian Cheffer’s Build Your Own Bloody Mary table or the CopyLady’s famous mimosa stand. A catered luncheon in The Forest’s new clubhouse will follow the golf, along with the auctions. A trip to Key West, golf vacations, autographed sports memorabilia and more were among the items up for bid in last year’s auctions.
“It’s so much fun, and it makes so much of a difference for people right here in our community,” attorney and event co-chair Shannon Puopolo said. “A lot of the giving the foundation was able to do last year, and much of what we’ll give out this year, is a direct result of the money that we raise at the golf tournament.”
Sponsorships are available, and auction items are still being accepted. Player registration ends on April 26, with early bird rates of $125 per player and $450 per foursome valid through April 5. After that date, the costs are $150 per player and $550 per foursome.
“This is just one more way the bar and the bar foundation are working to create positive change in Lee County,” said Lisa Poulin, the bar’s executive director. “We encourage everyone to come out, have fun, and join our attorneys and judges in making a real impact.”
Register to play at leebar.org/golf. Call Poulin at 239-334-0047 or email her at [email protected] to learn about sponsorships, auction donations and other ways to support the foundation.

Andrew Banyai named Lee County Citizen of the Year

FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 4, 2019) — People in desperate situations all across Lee County are turning to Andrew Banyai for help. The legal assistance that Banyai, the executive director of the Lee County Legal Aid Society, provides for free at the Clerk of Court’s Self Help Center is one of many reasons county commissioners on Tuesday presented him with the prestigious Paulette Burton Citizen of the Year Award.
The accolade goes each year to a Lee County citizen who has provided outstanding civic contributions to Lee County government. It was created in 1991 to memorialize Burton, a longtime Sanibel resident and government watchdog who died tragically in an automobile crash.
“It is such an incredible honor to be recognized along with Burton and all the vastly accomplished people who have won this award in the past,” Banyai said. “This, really, is about making Lee County a better place and the contributions all of us can make toward that goal.”
Banyai spends every Tuesday afternoon answering legal questions of all kinds at the Self Help Center, offering as much insight as he can to help people who can’t afford an attorney sort through cases too complex for them to effectively resolve on their own. People emerge with a sense of relief, direction, and a fighting chance against potentially devastating outcomes.
“A lot of these people are desperate and scared, and all they really need is just some basic guidance,” Banyai said. “Not everyone can afford an attorney, but everyone should be able to obtain a basic understanding of their legal circumstances and how to deal with them. That’s what we’re trying to provide access to here.”
Banyai pursues the same goal throughout his work with the Legal Aid Society, which is committed to justice for those who need it most. He dove head-first into his work when he started in February 2018, a culmination of a life-changing series of events.
He had spent more than a decade as a trial attorney when a freak accident destroyed his right eye and triggered the onset of a latent genetic defect in his left eye. It left his vision profoundly and permanently compromised, and he could no longer perform some of the basic functions of his job.
That’s when he sought the position he has now, for which his disability is no hindrance.  Within months, he’d cut the time it takes Legal Aid to respond to people who reach out for help from between six and 10 weeks to a mere 72 hours. He helped forge a partnership between Legal Aid and the United Way to help struggling clients get basic necessities like food, clothing and shelter. And Legal Aid has begun offering advice and counsel, if not formal representation, to a broader segment of the public.
“We have an opportunity to serve the community in a more holistic way than we have in the past,” Banyai said.
Banyai recruits other attorneys to address the vast need for legal assistance in Lee County through his role as co-chair of the Lee County Bar Association’s Pro Bono Committee. He’s also an active board member with After the Rain, a Lee County organization providing transitional housing for women recovering from addiction, homelessness and domestic violence. Thanks in part to Andrew’s work, county judges have grown to have an uncommon level of trust in After the Rain and often make referrals.
What time Andrew has that isn’t dedicated to civic duty he spends with wife Cindy and three young children, ages 9, 6 and 2.
Learn about Banyai’s background and his work with the Legal Aid Society at leecountylegalaid.org.

Chief Deputy Tax Collector named Women of Distinction finalist Branning up for Republican Women of Cape Coral awards

FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 3, 2019) – A key figure in the Lee County Tax Collector’s Office is getting recognized for making a difference. Lee County Chief Deputy Tax Collector Noelle Branning is a finalist for the 2019 Women of Distinction and Woman of the Year awards given annually by the Republican Women of Cape Coral, Federated. The awards recognize women who exhibit leadership, teamwork, integrity, compassion and dedication to the community.

“I am humbled and blessed to have been selected as a finalist,” Branning said. “My goal is to make a positive impact for the citizens of Lee County every day, and it’s heartwarming to receive affirmation that I’ve chosen the right path.”

Six Women of Distinction and one Woman of the Year will be named from among the finalists at a ceremony on Friday, April 12 from 6-9 p.m. at the Cape Coral Yacht Club.

“Noelle is a tremendous asset to the Tax Collector team, and she’s been instrumental in so many of innovations we’ve made to improve service for our customers,” Lee County Tax Collector Larry Hart said. “Bottom line, she is an achiever. She gets so much done here and in the community.”

Branning has tirelessly volunteered her time to more than a dozen community-focused endeavors. Through her work as a board member and former board president of the Children’s Advocacy Center of Southwest Florida, she coordinated efforts with court personnel to facilitate the creation of the therapy dog program in the 20th Judicial Circuit. The initiative allows therapy dogs to be present in the courtroom for abused and neglected children facing difficult family and legal situations.

She and her two children arranged through the Children’s Advocacy Center to volunteer in Pine Manor at Thanksgiving, helping young people from vastly different walks of life find common bonds and collaborate to serve beverages for a community meal. Branning and her children plan to perform the same service again this year.

Professionally, Branning is known for her leadership. She received Advanced Leadership Certification and Leadership MBA Lite Certification, both from the Florida Sterling Council, and she is a Florida Tax Collectors Association Executive Leadership Academy Graduate.

Branning has been tapped as a speaker for numerous prestigious engagements, including a Lee Republican Women’s Club forum where she spoke about her role on the 2016 Lee County Charter Review Commission. She also spoke as part of the Lee Government Resource & Orientation Workshop Series, better known as LeeGROWS, and the Lee County Association of Legal Professionals.

“Noelle is a major force for what’s good and what’s right in Southwest Florida,” Hart said. “She understands the problems our community faces, and she meets them head on. She is, without a doubt, a woman of profound distinction.”
