Dr. Brian Lawenda, a Navy veteran and Harvard-trained radiation oncologist, has joined Advocate Radiation Oncology and is seeing patients at the practice’s cancer treatment centers in Venice and Port Charlotte.

Dr. Lawenda earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry and cellular biology from the University of California at San Diego before completing his Doctor of Medicine degree at Temple University. He then completed a residency in radiation oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital through Harvard Medical School, as well as a fellowship in medical acupuncture through Stanford University and UCLA.

A functional medicine practitioner, Dr. Lawenda attained the rank of commander during his 13-year career with the U.S. Navy. Dr. Lawenda’s clinical experience includes both radiation oncology and integrative oncology, and his professional experience includes roles in academia and at oncology practices in California, Indiana, Nevada and Washington. Board certified by the American Board of Radiology, Dr. Lawenda is a member of the American College of Radiation Oncology and American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology.

Dr. Lawenda treats patients with a variety of cancers, including breast, prostate, lung, head, neck and other types of cancers, using Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Three-Dimensional Conformal Radiation Therapy (3DCRT), Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) or Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR), Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Brachytherapy. In addition to producing peer-reviewed articles, Dr. Lawenda has authored two books: “Empowered Against Cancer: Science-Based Strategies to Optimize Your Treatments and Thrive – A Practical Guide” and “Optimizing Health and Cancer Outcomes with Functional Medicine.”

Dr. Lawenda sees patients at Advocate Radiation Oncology’s locations at 8026 S. Tamiami Trail, Suite 101 in Venice, and 3080 Harbor Blvd. in Port Charlotte.
