Getting Ready for Fall at FGCU Academy

Greetings, Printed catalogs are now available for you to pick up at the Naples Center. They will be available at your local libraries next week.

Our Fall line-up is ready & waiting for you. Registrations are coming in. Sign up early to get your spot. You can always cancel. (If you wish to withdraw from a program, please notify the Academy at 239-434-4737 no later than 5pm, 3 business days prior to the first session of the program in order to receive a refund.) Our goal is to not have to cancel any classes this fall due to low registration. We need you to help us achieve this goal by registering now!

We have added some new locations for courses (Pelican Landing in Bonita Springs and Kleist Center on the FGCU main campus in Fort Myers).

We are excited about the return of our Salke Contemporary Art Series this winter (after a 2 year hiatus). You can sign up now for the series or individual classes.

We are looking forward to our Sunday movie series, Mah Jongg classes and so much more. Grab yourself a copy of the catalog and start checking off your courses.

For those of you who won’t be down until January, we have plenty of courses available online for you to participate in as well.

Get Ready to Vote in the November Elections

Election Day 2022 is November 8. In this presentation, we will review the federal, state and local offices and candidates, and the proposed amendments to the Florida constitution that will be on the ballot for Collier County voters. Join us and get a jump-start on being a more informed voter.

Beyond Snapshots: Taking the Best Photos
@ Naples Center – September 26 | 10 – 12 p.m.

Have you ever asked yourself, “Why do all of those other photographs look better than mine?” While it is easy to tell the difference between a snapshot and a real photograph, it is not always easy to pinpoint what qualities made your picture one or the other. This composition lecture will help you identify the attributes to turn your photos into works of art.

The Legacy of J.S. Bach and His Sons: Lecture & Concert

The music of Johann Sebastian Bach has had a profound influence on composers and musicians to the present day. Bach, who came from a reputable lineage of church musicians, fathered twenty children, four of whom distinguished themselves as composers and musicians in their own right. The works of each of his sons bear the influence of their father, who was their mentor, while also reflecting the contemporary Roccoco and Classical styles that had supplanted the Baroque tradition. Enjoy a presentation of music by J.S. Bach and of four of his sons: Wilhelm Friedemann, Carl Phillip Emanuel, Johann Christoph Friedrich and Johann Christian.

Five Eyes: Global Espionage, Eavesdropping and the Collection of Communications Intelligence

Since World War II, the U.S. and U.K. have had an alliance to jointly collect and share communications intelligence. That agreement has expanded to include other types of intelligence. It also grew to include Australia, Canada and New Zealand and became called Five Eyes. It is the most effective intelligence alliance in history. Join us for a fascinating introduction into the world of signals intelligence and global eavesdropping. Catherine the Great
@ The Arlington – September 27 | 2:30 – 4 p.m.

Bright, ambitious and imbued with ideas of the Enlightenment, Catherine rose from a German princess to Empress of Russia through her wits and wiles, not to mention intrigue and the convenient elimination of her husband. Her correspondence with the great minds of the day is legendary. She had grand plans for Russia, and encouraged by her lover Potemkin, set about the expansion, modernization and education of the country. Although her reign also saw the violently dangerous Pugachev rebellion, Catherine’s accomplishments and devotion to Russia have earned her a place among history’s most Enlightened Despots.

U.S. National Security Council: Pivotal Role in Coordinating U.S. Foreign and Defense Policy

Ambassador Hugo Llorens recently retired from the U.S. diplomatic service. In his distinguished 36-year career, he served twice as Ambassador in Honduras and Afghanistan. Llorens also served at the White House on the National Security staff as a Director for President George W. Bush. In that role and in other senior assignments, he gained an intimate perspective of the NSC’s critical role coordinating U.S. Foreign and Defense policy. He is eager to share his knowledge/experiences and underscore that efficacious policy requires a smooth running NSC.
