September’s Featured Gallery Exhibit

Storm Stories: A Juried Exhibition

In the Gallery September 1-30

Soft Opening Reception: Sept 1, 5-7pm • This free event will include beverages.

Closing reception: September 28, 5-7pm • This free event will include light bites by Jayne Baker and
refreshments. Join us to honor and memorialize the one year anniversary of Hurricane Ian making landfall.

Our September Gallery is a year in the making. This Juried Exhibition is in conjunction with the oral history
project, Storm Stories. We created this project in the wake of Hurricane Ian. We saw a great need for healing
in our community after the devastating storm. By collecting stories of people’s experiences during the storm
and by asking local artists to use their experiences to create art, we hope to help our community find beauty
and begin the process of healing.

Theatre Gallery Artist: Hope: The Others Side of Hurricane Ian shows how the deadly storm united people
in the one thing that couldn’t be destroyed. Hope. Families, friends and volunteers across Southwest Florida
met moments of hurt with hopeful acts of caring. Nonprofits, businesses and government agencies provided
vital resources and infrastructure repairs. These compelling moments captured in pictures, reflect the endured
hurt and shared determination of people — to keep hope alive.

In the Member’s Gallery: Tamara Culp and Jodi Enders

In the Theatre: For those of us who live at the shoreline by Sasha Wortzel

Youth Theatre Presents Addams Family Young @ Part

Sept 29-Oct 1 • Celebrate the wackiness in every family with our best-selling Broadway musical
adapted for middle school-age performers! Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness,
has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family whom
her parents have never met.

She confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do some-
thing he’s never done before– keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change
for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and
his parents.

Songs & Stories with Denny Laine

Thursday, Sept 7, 7-9:30 pm • Denny Laine, two-time Grammy® Award winner, Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame® inductee, and founding member of both The Moody Blues and Paul McCartney’s
post-Beatles band, Wings, will bring his intimate “Songs & Stories” show to Alliance for the Arts.

The 90-minute “Songs & Stories” show features Denny performing solo acoustic versions of songs
from his expansive career including his days with The Moody Blues, Ginger Baker’s Air Force,
Wings and others. He’ll share songs by some of the artists that inspired him as a young musician as
well as songs he had a hand in that earned him a place in Rock & Roll history. A natural storyteller,
Denny recounts behind-the-scenes anecdotes about some of the legendary musicians he has worked
with and the places he has been throughout his remarkable career.

We are excited to share that Fuckup Nights is coming back to SWFL and has officially launched its
own chapter. Join us on Friday, September 8th for a night to remember.

What’s Fuckup Nights you ask? Fuckup Nights is a global movement present in more than 300 cities
and 90 countries, where stories of failure are shared, focusing on the human side of the failures, and
celebrating the learning instead of stigmatizing failure.

In this event, you will hear from some of SWFL’s most known Artists, Makers, Movers, and Shakers
share the biggest failure of their careers, what went wrong, and what they learned. After each story,
we will allow some time for questions, letting curiosity and conversation flourish. Don’t miss out
on this unique experience!

One Pint at a Time

Wednesday, Sept 20, 6-9:00 pm • Craft beer generates tens of billions of dollars annually
for the US economy. Despite beer’s Egyptian and African heritage, these traditions have
been mostly forgotten and are rarely found in American brewing culture. At present, Black
and Brown-owned breweries make up less than 1% of the nearly 9,500 breweries in operation.
Eager to shift the historical perception of who makes and drinks beer, Black and Brown brewers,
brand owners and influencers across the country are reshaping the craft beer industry and the
future of America’s favorite adult beverage.

Join us in our Art House Cinema, as we present this independent film in partnership with South Arts
and their Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers.

Tampa based brewery Bastet Brewing, also featured in the film, will be in attendance pouring two
of their craft beers for those 21+.

Call to Artists

Art in Flight

Submissions due August 21, 2023 • We live in a rapidly changing world, from technology
to our physical environments, it can feel daunting to try to keep up. For this exhibition, we
ask artists to meditate on themes of change through a hopeful lens. Artists are asked to create
work that explores ideas of growth, progress, and resilience. Artworks can represent the artist’s
personal self-growth or images that relate to growth they see in the world around them. Artworks
will feature traditional media such as painting and drawing but alternative approaches to mixed
media or fiber arts are also encouraged.

Artwork will be on display at RSW from September 2023-February 2024.
