Instructor Spotlight

Jan Ellen Atkielski

The Alliance for the Arts ROCKS and teaching workshops at the Alliance for the
past 8 years has been a wonderful experience. When I moved to Florida, almost
20 years ago, the Alliance was one of the first places I looked up to explore art in
the area and it did not disappoint. The organization is generous and creative and
so supportive of the arts community in all its formats.

“Expressive Palette Knife” (2 days) and “Are you Stuck?” (1 or 2 days) are the
workshops I teach, and it’s hard to pick a favorite. Introducing or expanding a
painter’s skill in palette knife is so rewarding. We always have fun in the work-
shop. Day one can seem difficult, but by day 2, the rhythm of the knife kicks in
and everyone is able to complete a painting. I’m always amazed at the hard work
and the great results.

“Are You Stuck?” is more difficult because I am helping artists out in a variety of
mediums. But it is such a blast to see a painting that was given up on, get new life!
It’s also important to show that many paintings can be pulled out of the soup. Un-
locking some of the ways to correct a piece is very appreciated by the participants.

Students really become family to me during a workshop. I am impressed by the variety
of styles, the hard work, and the passion for art. They often have a technique I have not
seen or inspire me by their desire to improve. I’m also happy to have so many returning
students.
