October’s Featured Gallery Exhibit ![]() Moving Roots: Mariapia Malerba In the Gallery October 6-28 • Opening Reception: Oct 6, 5-7pm • This event is open to the public. Come meet your neighbors and enjoy beverages and light refreshments from Jayne Baker at this event! The gallery will be completely wrapped from top to bottom in larger-than-life works of art, transforming it in a portal of imagination, a silent participant, a tapestry of monochromatic hues with fleeting touches of crimson, recounting the enchanting tale of “Moving Roots and the Comic Adventure “. This exhibit beckons souls to embark, to delve within, to illuminate the unknown, “Moving Roots” invites us to explore, the depths of our being, leaving a trail of questions, emotions and insights. Theatre Gallery Artist: Karen S. Johnson relocated to sunny Cape Coral in 2019 to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a full-time artist. Born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, IL, Karen has always been an artist at heart since childhood. She spent 30 years as a professional hair stylist in Naperville, IL while taking workshops from talented artists in both Illinois and Florida. In the Member’s Gallery: David Hampton describes his work as an artistic effort to paint his life experiences. Channeling Edvard Munch, he views his pieces as his soul’s diary, works of self- confession that he hopes will help others realize that we are all human and therefore never truly strangers. Find Out More → View All Events → In the Theatre this October ![]() August Wilson’s Radio Golf Oct 19-29 • Set in Pittsburgh in the late 1990s, Radio Golf is the story of a successful entrepreneur who aspires to become the city’s first Black mayor. But when the past begins to catch up with him, secrets get revealed that could be his undoing. Real estate developer and entrepreneur Harmond Wilks is determined to become the first Black mayor of Pittsburgh and is on a mission to revive his blighted childhood neighborhood. As Wilks confronts the past, he is forced to question how pursuing change could put his neighborhood’s history at risk. Both moving and funny, Radio Golf is the culmination of August Wilson’s ten-play American Century Cycle chronicling each decade of African-American life in the twentieth century. Bigger and wilder than ever, the Annual Rocky Horror Picture Show outdoor movie event returns to the Alliance for the Arts on October 14th! This nocturnal tradition has been tantalizing audiences for over 40 years. Be part of the long tradition of crowd participation as guests are encouraged to dance along to the Time Warp, yell back at the movie, and throw props in time with the action on screen and our shadow cast. The event includes a costume contest, food trucks, raffles, vendors, prop bags and a night under the stars with 700 of your favorite Transylvanians! A must-attend event, Arts on Tap features a performance by Florida Native, JJ Grey & Mofro. Born and bred in Florida, JJ Grey plays music that mixes raw rural blues with tough, swampy Southern rock, generating a sound that has a loose, natural feel while maintaining a potent edge. JJ Grey’s songs draw deep on his heritage as well as his clear-eyed perspective on the world around him. You’ll feel amazing listening to JJ Grey and even better knowing that proceeds from this event fund the Alliance’s programs, which ensure access to the arts throughout the year. The VIP experience includes up close seating, a full cash bar with complimentary beer, indoor restrooms, and a commemorative tasting glass. VIP Tickets are $150 each. We are launching our new and exciting Photography Club hosted by photographer and multi-faceted artist Duncan Metts, and this club is exclusive to Alliance members. Duncan will focus on fostering artistic growth and understanding amongst members through a wide range of photography assignments and resulting image reviews. This supportive and encouraging environment will allow participants to get to know themselves better and observe the natural world in a new and beautiful way. Overtown is the oldest Black community in Miami and it would bear witness to the full arc of the civil rights movement.
