What’s Blooming

Chenille Plant

The Chenille Plant, Acalypha hispida, is dangling with furry flowers that add a unique
interest to the gardens! It is a tropical shrub native to New Guinea that can reach heights
between four to six feet tall. Throughout the year, but primarily in the warmer months,
this unique plant will produce clusters of fuzzy, crimson flowers that hang like a tassel.
It is dioecious, producing male and female flowers on different plants. The flowers are
complemented by large, bright green leaves that are shaped like a heart. For best growth,
plant this garden gem in well-draining soil in a location that receives full sun. Visitors can
find this plant next to the pergola between the Edison main and guest house.

Queens Crepe Myrtle

A beautiful spread of crinkled, papery flowers are surfacing on the Queen’s Crepe Myrtle,
Lagerstroemia Speciosa! It is native to tropical Asia. From June through July, this garden
gem will produce large, three-inch wide bright pink to lavender flowers that form in clust-
ers. The blooms are complemented by dark green, leathery leaves that turn red before fall-
ing in the winter. After flowering, round, green fruits will begin to emerge that gradually
become darker as they mature. Its smooth bark is used for railroad ties and construction in
India. Visitors can find this tree on the riverside across from the Edison guest house.

National Pollinator Week

National Pollinator Week

Today kicks off the start to National Pollinator Week! Not only do pollinators provide
beauty and a flurry of activity that animate our gardens, but they are the key to produc-
ing some of the valuable food sources we eat. Here at Edison Ford, we have a plethora
of fruit and flowering trees, ornamental plants, and vegetables and herbs that attract
pollinators. Many of the vegetables visitors will find in the Garden Shoppe and through-
out the site are started from seed, right where Thomas Edison grew his own food.

Next to the Garden Shoppe, there is a butterfly garden on the side of the museum along
Larchmont Avenue. Walk down the path filled with lush shrubs and vines that are cover-
ed with so many blooms. There are also benches nearby where you can sit and observe
the mesmerizing sight of a butterfly landing on a plant. If you would like to start your
own butterfly garden, we have a large selection of host and nectar plants, such as Milk-
weed for Monarchs.

We also offer garden talks and gardening classes that teach about different plants and how
to grow them in Florida. New classes and talks will be posted on our website calendar later
this year. For more information, visit our website at edisonford.org.
