Edison and Ford Winter Estates Closing for Hurricane Ian

FORT MYERS, Fla. (September 26, 2022) — The historic property of Edison and Ford Winter Estates is preparing for possible hurricane conditions. The site will be closed to the public on Tuesday, September 27 and Wednesday, September 28. The site is scheduled to re-open on Thursday, September 29, weather permitting. The site is open regular hours (9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) today, September 26. Additionally, this week’s Inside-the-Homes tours are cancelled and will resume next week.

Hurricane shutters are being installed on historic homes and buildings. Porch furniture in vulnerable locations will be moved inside, and antique cars will be moved from the Ford property to the museum.

Care is also taken to protect the historic gardens. Horticulturists and landscaping specialists conduct stormscaping as needed to minimize damage to trees and shrubs. Detailed records are documented, including inventory and photographs of plants and trees prior to any storms.

If the hurricane does hit Fort Myers, visitors are advised to check the website at EdisonFord.org or call 239-334-7419 prior to arriving on Thursday to ensure the site is open.

Edison and Ford Winter Estates is the internationally known winter home site of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. More than 220,000 visitors walk through the location each year from all around the globe. The organization has received many awards, including the National Stewardship Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the National Garden Clubs’ Historic Preservation Award. The property is an official project of “Save America’s Treasures,” a Florida Historic Landmark and a National Register Historic Site. The Edison Botanic Laboratory is a National Historic Chemical Landmark. The site is open every day (closed Thanksgiving and Christmas) from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and until 9 p.m. during the month of December for Holiday Nights, except Christmas and Christmas Eve.
