Fort Myers Miracle announce dates for 2018 youth baseball camps

FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 16, 2018) – The Fort Myers Miracle will be offering three baseball camps for children in Southwest Florida to learn the game from professional players and coaches.
The 13th annual “Disability Dream & Do” baseball camp for children with special needs runs from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 28. The camp is free in partnership with the Dave Clark Foundation, and offers children with disabilities an opportunity to interact with Miracle players and coaches on the ballfield as they progress through hitting, fielding and throwing stations.
The Miracle also are offering two baseball camps for youth looking to sharpen their skills and fundamentals under the guidance of Miracle players, coaches and staff. The camp for children ages 6 to 8 is July 10-12 and ages 9 to 12 is July 17-19. Both camps run from 9 a.m. to noon at CenturyLink Sports Complex, 14100 Six Mile Cypress Parkway in Fort Myers. The cost is $115 per child and includes a T-shirt, Miracle gift, pre-camp snacks and lunches, and one box seat ticket to a Miracle game each night of the camp.
“I think our players and coaches enjoy these baseball camps as much as the children,” said Chris Peters, Miracle president and general manager. “It’s a great opportunity for them to share their baseball knowledge and insight with area children, but more importantly, just show them how to enjoy the game of baseball.”
Space is limited. For more information or to register for a camp, please call 239-768-4210 or visit MiracleBaseball.com.

His live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience. He is a passionate performer who is a more pissed-off optimist than a mean-spirited curmudgeon. Lewis is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world.

PATRICIA ESPOSITO AND JAY LANA “SEARCH FOR THE METAL MUSE” AT MAY’S ART OPENIN

April 16, 2018 – Fort Myers, FL – Artists Patricia Esposito and Jay Lana partnered for “In Search for the Metal Muse: Juxtapositions in Disarray,” opening this May! This visceral show features sculptures that deal with issues of urbanization, war, and the environment. Through metal works, experience the depth of these artists’ understanding of the modern world. The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center is located at 2301 First St. in the historic downtown Fort Myers River District.

In an artist statement from Patricia Esposito, she explains, “Working with the abstract and with scrap metal comes from my soul and subconscious. I call it spirit or my ancestors coming thru, giving my art a voice.  Recycled materials reflecting their past is ongoing in my work. Rust fascinates me. Corrosion of many layers, colors and textures can take years to achieve the beautiful patina of its current life. Metal goes thru a metamorphosis, not unlike the colors and textures of the seasons.  The contrast of earth and rust, with the harshness and coldness of steel, can live harmoniously as in some of my two and three dimensional works. It can take months and sometimes years to locate the proper scrap metal to complete a work of art. My artwork often includes the four elements, Earth, Water, Air, Fire—all present in the organic materials that nature has created and that I enjoy using in my art.
The ongoing crisis of urbanization of what is left of our wilderness is always on my mind. And so is the concern for a third world war.  Some of my art pieces reflect these concerns on the environment and how it affects our life as in my Tree Zero series and in my Water, Oppenheimer’s Tears, and Hiroshima art.   The pitchforks are becoming harder and harder to find, as in my Politics piece. So are organic farms and farmers vanishing from our planet to make room for GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organisms) in our food, the main cause for many diseases.  In this imperfect world my art has been said to be ‘perfectly imperfect.’”

Patricia Esposito is a unique abstract multimedia artist. Her passion is boldly exploring contrasts in her use of materials. She grew up hiking in the woods of New Jersey and exploring the streets of New York City.  Currently she is engaging in expeditions through the Florida Everglades. The natural decay of objects, whether in an urban or industrial area or out in the wilderness, are brought together harmoniously in her dynamic art.  The juxtaposition of metal, wood, photographs and electric light thrive together as a synergistic expression in her work. All four elements of nature are always present in her powerful creations. She was one of 50 artists in 50 years of photography at The Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC whose work was chosen for their 50 year celebration. She also exhibited at Westbeth Gallery in NYC, Sona Gallery, Naples, Fl. Eros Gallery Naples Fl, and received award at SBDAC.
Jay Lana is a self-taught sculptor who lives in SW Florida. His artistic process began as a child when he used to dismantle various devices and then adding the components to his toys. As he grew up other interests took his attention, he took on pencil drawing in his teenage years, but he always kept those drawings to himself. It was until three years ago he felt this urge to become a sculptor full time and create functional and decorative sculptures using reclaimed objects.
His primary source of inspiration comes from post-apocalyptic stories and other retro-futuristic art movements. His process is intuitive and his art is characterized by a heavy patina and worn-out look, often symmetric shapes, and bold compositions. He has exhibited his artwork in several art exhibitions and he is the recipient of several awards; once juror David Acevedo stated about Jay Lana’s work, “Wonderful, and outstanding.  I love the punk culture process, putting disjointed things together…” His work has also been featured in local, national and international magazines and blogs.
His artwork is in many private residences throughout the U.S. and overseas, recently he worked in a public installation in a renowned restaurant in Sanibel Island, Florida and in another restaurant in Nantucket, Massachusetts. He is currently a member of the SWFFCG and the Alliance for the Arts; he is currently a full time exhibiting artist at The Tower Gallery on Sanibel Island, Florida.

Harry Connick, Jr.’s career has exemplified excellence across multiple platforms in the entertainment world. He has received Grammy and Emmy awards as well as Tony nominations for his live and recorded musical performances, his achievements in film and television and his appearances on Broadway as both an actor and a composer.

The foundation of Connick’s art is the music of his native New Orleans, where he began performing as a pianist and vocalist at the age of five.  Over the past three decades, he has established himself as a musician, singer and composer par excellence, a legendary live performer and a best-selling artist with millions of CDs sold around the world.  Connick has also made his mark as an actor in films (appearing in over 19 films such as “Dolphin Tale,” “Hope Floats,” “PS I Love You,” “Copycat”), on television (“American Idol,” Will & Grace,” “South Pacific”) and on Broadway (“Pajama Game,” “Thou Shalt Not”).

In the fall of 2016 Connick launched “HARRY,” a nationally syndicated daytime television show hosted by Connick and featuring his touring band.  “HARRY” is a daily hour of family friendly television that seeks to entertain, uplift and inspire.  The show also reflects the unparalleled entertainment skills of Harry Connick, Jr.’s varied career and the television industry recognized the debut season of “HARRY” with five Emmy nominations, including a nomination for Best Host, and a Critics Choice nomination for Best Talk Show.

Despite his busy career, Connick has always found the time to be charitable and has done some of his most important work in his efforts to help New Orleans rebuild after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. He, along with friend Branford Marsalis, conceived of “Musicians’ Village,” a community in the Upper Ninth Ward of New Orleans.  Musicians’ Village provides homes for Katrina-displaced musicians and its focal point, the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music, is an after-school teaching facility for children, a performance hall and recording studio for musicians, and a gathering place for the community.

Connick’s honors, including the induction into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame, Honorary Doctorates from Tulane and Loyola Universities and the Jefferson Award for Public Service, have not led Harry Connick, Jr. to slow his creative pace; they only confirm his determination to apply his talents in ways that prove inspirational to other artists and publicly spirited citizens.

Special community discussion after the performance of Visiting Mr. Green at The Laboratory Theater of Florida

FORT MYERS, FL (April 11, 2018) – The Laboratory Theater of Florida presents a special Holocaust Remembrance discussion after the April 19th performance of “Visiting Mr. Green,” at The Laboratory Theater of Florida. This show is sponsored by Ella Nayor and Jeffrey Cull.
The Lab is honored to welcome Dr. Robert Hilliard, a concentration camp liberator; Rabbi Stephen Fuchs, spiritual leader at  Bat Yam Temple of the Islands on Sanibel; Cesare Frustaci, a childhood Holocaust survivor; and Dr. Wolfgang Vogel, a former member of the Hitler Youth. The discussion will take place immediately following the performance, which will begin at 8pm.
Dr. Robert Hilliard is a retired university professor, author, and World War II liberator for which he is credited with saving thousands of Holocaust survivors. At the time, he was a U.S. Army private and wrote for a US military newspaper in Germany. There were about 400 displaced prisoners of the Nazi Holocaust, survivors of the Dachau and Buchenwald concentration camps, in St. Ottilien, Germany. This displaced persons camp was little better than the concentration camps run by the Nazis, according to Dr. Hilliard’s memoir,  “Surviving the Americans: the Continued Struggle of the Jews After Liberation.” Although there were no gas chambers, there was neglect and, in some cases, exploitation.
Dr. Hilliard and fellow soldier, Edward Herman, decided to do something to help the survivors. They devised ways to get food and supplies from the community and their own mess hall and smuggle them to St. Ottilien. They started a letter-writing campaign in which they wrote letters, made many copies, and sent them to family and friends. The campaign eventually caught President Harry Truman’s attention and an investigation was launched. A news story came out in the New York Times on Sept. 30, 1945: “President Orders Eisenhower to End New Abuse of Jews… Likens Our Treatment to that of the Nazis.” The Holocaust survivors got the help they needed.
Rabbi Stephen Fuchs has been the spiritual leader at Bat Yam Temple of the Islands on Sanibel for over 40 years. In 2011 he was appointed President of the World Union for Progressive Judaism. During this period he spoke throughout the world about Reform Judaism and values. In 2015, Rabbi Fuchs conducted the first Jewish service in the city of Friedrichstadt, Germany, since Kristallnacht. And in 2014, Rabbi Fuchs became the first rabbi ever to give a sermon in The Michaelis-Kirche in Kaltenkirchen, the site of a former concentration camp. Rabbi Fuchs is focused on Holocaust remembrance efforts as his father was imprisoned in Dachau concentration camp. During his religious leadership career and life, he has received numerous awards for his social activism and work including the Four Chaplains awards. He has authored several books including “What’s in it for Me” and “Who Created God and Other Essays.”
Cesare Frustaci was born in Napoli, Italy, to a Jewish mother who was a Hungarian ballerina and a Roman Catholic father who was a renowned orchestra director and music composer. Cesare was baptized and raised in the Catholic faith. But in 1938, the Italian government issued anti-Semitic laws and began expelling foreign Jews from the country. Two year-old Cesare and his mother returned to Hungary where they were forced to live inside a Yellow Star house within a Jewish ghetto. In an effort to save her son, Cesare’s mother sent him out onto the streets with only a piece of bread and his baptismal certificate. She did not know if she would ever see her son again. While separated from his mother, Cesare became resourceful and devised clever ways to find food and shelter to survive. However, he was eventually captured and sent in a boxcar to a youth detention camp. During this time, his mother survived a death march and a series of concentration camps and they were eventually reunited.
Dr. Wolfgang Vogel was born in 1930 in Dresden, Germany. He grew up during the Third Reich and WWII. After the Dresden firebombing that claimed the lives of some of his friends in 1945, Dr. Vogel was drafted into the paramilitary. A captain told the boys to go home before they ever experienced military action, likely saving their lives. While Dr. Vogel is now a retired pharmacology professor, he was, as a child, a member of the Hitler Youth. Families such as his were left with little option but to put their children in the Hitler Youth program or risk danger to their families. He has spoken and conducted interviews with the hopes of helping people understand the dangers of propaganda and the need for education and understanding to not repeat history.
About Visiting Mr. Green:
Having almost hit 86-year-old widower Mr. Green, Ross Gardiner is charged with reckless driving. He must now complete a form of community service and visit Mr. Green every week for the next six months. Though both men are quick to resent these forced visits, their conversations soon reveal family secrets and past hardships. A story of acceptance and open-mindedness, replete with charm and poignancy.
“…this is a two-person gem.” – Denver Post
“There is a level of intelligence and compassionate understanding here which exceeds what we expect to find in the category of sentimental comedy entertainments…“ -Talkin’ Broadway
Local favorite Michael Hennessey (The Best Man),  who plays Mr. Green, says “Visiting Mr. Green transcends the ‘gaps’ between young and old, gay and straight, parent and child by immersing us in their one unifying common thread, love. You will love this play.”
The internationally-loved play also stars Brandon Somers (Burn This) and is directed by artistic director Annette Trossbach, who selected the play for this season because of its honest, hopeful, poignant portrayal of two men who have found themselves marginalized for different reasons and eventually find common ground and friendship. “Conservative Jewish Mr Green doesn’t want anything to do, at first, with energetic and modern Ross Gardiner. But tolerance leads to acceptance and then leads to their embracing of one another and a reevaluation of who each of them are. The show is a gentle reminder that, through openness, peace and kindness are possible.”
Visiting Mr. Green plays from April 13th to April 29th at the Laboratory Theater of Florida. Performance dates are as follows:
April 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, 28 at 8pm
April 22, 28, 29 at 2pm
Tickets are available to purchase on Brownpapertickets.com or by calling the box office at 239-218-0481. For additional savings, guests may purchase a 2017-2018 Season Pass.

The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center established a Junior Board to provide young adults with an opportunity to gain experience serving on a non-profit board. Each year, the Junior Board is given a budget and tasked with developing events for the community. The Junior Board meets regularly, plans events, and creates an action plan to put on the event. This extracurricular initiative serves multiple purposes: it allows Junior Board members to fulfill volunteer hours required for scholarships; it helps members gain experiences related to teamwork, planning, and implementing projects developed; and it provides the members an opportunity to gain experience serving on a managerial board.
Teen Talent Night was created by the 2017 Junior Board. Now in its 2nd year, Teen Talent Night has attracted the interest of many of Southwest Florida’s brightest young stars. This competitive showcase features teen talent in visual art, music, theater, and film. Teens can enter these talent categories for a chance to win up to $600 in cash prizes! Plus, contestants and attendees can enjoy food, music, raffles, and so much more. It’s free to enter the contest, and only $5 to attend!
