Habitat for Humanity dedicates 11 new homes in 3 days across Lee and Hendry counties

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Aug. 23, 2019) – Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties dedicated an unprecedented 11 new homes over a three-day period in mid-August, celebrating the lifechanging impacts that result from purchasing a safe, affordable home.
Surrounded by volunteers, donors, friends and Habitat for Humanity staff, 11 families in Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Lehigh Acres, Bonita Springs and LaBelle were handed keys to their new homes at separate dedication ceremonies on the front steps of their new homes.
“Each of these hardworking families completed more than 300 hours of ‘sweat equity’ and met all of Habitat for Humanity’s requirements for home ownership,” said Becky Lucas, CEO, Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties. “It’s such an emotional moment seeing parents and children walk through the front door of a brand-new home – their own home – after so much hard work and dedication that brought them to this point.”
Homeowners also must complete financial literacy and home maintenance classes, pay closing costs, and commit to paying an affordable monthly mortgage payment.
Since 1982, more than 1,600 Lee and Hendry families in need of a hand up have partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve their home. Alongside volunteers, Habitat homeowners help build their own home.
Generous individuals, businesses and organizations help provide resources to build each Habitat for Humanity home. The 11 homes dedicated Aug. 14-16 were built through the generosity of The Edwardson Family Foundation, The Ann Pettersson-Power Charitable Gift Fund, Dennis and Darlene Kozlowski, Alan Einhorn and Vicki Cooper, Habitat for Humanity Restore, Bonita Bay Club, David and Linda Lucas, and Henderson, Franklin, Starnes & Holt, P.A.

LEE COUNTY PORT AUTHORITY BREAKS GROUND ON NEW AIRPORT TRAFFIC CONTROL TOWER AT RSW

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Aug. 22, 2019) – The Lee County Port Authority, Board of Port Commissioners, county officials, business partners and other state and federal representatives held a groundbreaking ceremony today marking the official start of the construction phase for a new Airport Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) and Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) facility at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers, Fla.
The new ATCT is an $80 million project that will replace the current tower, built in 1982, with a state-of the-art-facility located next to the airport’s Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighting Station. The ATCT project is funded with money from the Florida Department of Transportation and Airport Passenger Facility Charges. The construction phase of the ATCT will support more than 300 jobs and operation of the tower is planned for summer 2022.
“With record-breaking passenger growth during the past several decades, the new Airport Traffic Control Tower project is a crucial investment in RSW’s infrastructure and will enhance the safety and capacity at Southwest Florida International Airport,” said Jeff Mulder, A.A.E, executive director of the Lee County Port Authority. “Commercial air transportation is vital to our community as it connects our region to the rest of the world and allows us access to an increasingly global marketplace.”
The new tower will be approximately 200 feet tall from the ground to the cab roof, which is more than twice the height of the existing tower. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Air Traffic Controllers will be able to view the entire airport and runway approaches under the current and future parallel runway configurations for both air and ground control.
“We will equip the new tower with the latest technologies so FAA Air Traffic Controllers can continue to provide the safest, most efficient service for flights at RSW for decades to come,” said Michael O’Harra, regional administrator for the FAA Southern Region. “Strengthening the infrastructure at this growing airport will benefit travelers in Fort Myers and throughout the National Airspace System.”
Southwest Florida International Airport served nearly 9.4 million passengers in 2018 and is on pace to reach 10 million passengers in 2019. Southwest Florida International Airport is one of the top 50 U.S. airports for passenger traffic. No ad valorem (property) taxes are used for airport operation or construction. Golisano Foundation Provides Grant to LARC to Support Expansion of LAB: Learn, Achieve, Become

FORT MYERS, FL (August 19, 2019) – Lee Association for Remarkable Citizens (LARC) has been awarded a $120,000 grant from the Golisano Foundation to support the expansion of LAB:  Learn, Achieve, Become.   LAB will offer an experiential learning environment for hundreds of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) that transforms traditional program areas into spaces for innovation, vocation, demonstration and learning.  Five Labs will focus on skills for work and independent living and include Lab for Living, Wellness Lab, Smart Living Lab, Vocational Exploration Lab and Collaboration Lab.
“The goal of LAB is to prepare individuals with IDD for success and meaningful inclusion in our community,” said Kevin Lewis, LARC Executive Director. “That requires important skills that build upon each other.  Not only vocational training, but self-care, managing their day to day environment, navigating technology, and interacting with others.  LAB works because we recognize each of these layers as crucial components to increased independence and empowerment.”
The Golisano Foundation is one of the largest private foundations in the nation devoted to supporting programs and services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It was founded by philanthropist and entrepreneur Tom Golisano, who has supported several non-profit organizations in Southwest Florida including Golisano Children’s Hospital.
The Foundation’s grant will support phase two of LAB, which prepares space for the Wellness and Smart Living Labs on LARC’s Fort Myers campus.  The grant also supports a LAB staff person who will oversee and implement the LAB curriculum.   The Wellness Lab provides a place to learn about healthy living, fitness, nutrition, oral health, advocacy, skills for self-care; all paramount to success in every day work and life.  The Smart Living Lab teaches people how to live and thrive in a touch screen world, from ordering meals, navigating transportation, applying for jobs, operating everyday appliances, using the internet and computer software.
“We are honored to receive this grant from the Golisano Foundation, which is the largest private foundation grant in LARC’s 65-year history,” said Angela Katz, LARC Development Director. “There are more than 3,700 children in Lee County Schools with cognitive disabilities and the Foundation’s generous support will allow us to better prepare the individuals we currently serve and future generations to live more independent and fulfilling lives.”
“We appreciate the important role and services LARC has provided to those with IDD in Lee County over the organization’s long, proud history.  We’re happy to assist the agency as it evolves to address current and future needs by creating opportunities for independent living in a more inclusive community in SW Florida,” said Ann Costello, Director of the Golisano Foundation.  “LAB’s innovative, person-centered approach will empower more individuals with IDD to make their way productively and creatively in their communities.”
The Wellness and Smart Living LABs will complement the LAB for Living, which opened in July.  LABS for Living is a mock apartment-style setting that provides participants with hands-on training in daily living skills. Phase three, which is planned for the future, will include the Vocational Exploration Lab, with a commercial culinary training kitchen designed to meet the needs of hospitality employers, and the Collaboration Lab, which will introduce LARC participants to change makers in our community.  Initially, all of the Labs will be accessible to LARC participants as well as families.  Over time, LARC’s goal to offer schools and other likeminded organizations access.
To learn more about LARC and LAB, contact Angela Katz, Development Director at 239-334-6285 x229 or email [email protected] or visit www.larcleecounty.org.
