The Lab presents Disenchanted: a New Musical Comedy, Stay at Home Version

FORT MYERS, FL (August 20, 2020 ) – The Laboratory Theater of Florida will present an audio-visual hybrid film and stage production of Disenchanted, a New Musical Comedy.
With theaters around the world dark to help curb the spread of the global pandemic, artists are anxious to get back to performing. The theater has instituted a rigorous pandemic protocol. This protocol incorporates a quarantine model for staff, crew, and cast,  which includes but is not limited to isolation, temp checks upon arrival, masks for everyone not on stage (limited to one actor at a time), frequent handwashing, and buckets of hand sanitizer.
Our story begins years and years after our famous princesses had their supposed “happily ever after.”
They’re not too thrilled with how things turned out for them…in fact, they’re jaded, sassy, enlightened, and empowered. And what better way for them to express their disenchantment with the “princess complex” than through song?
Three virtual performances will be available – Friday, Sept. 18th, Saturday, Sept. 26th at 8 pm, and Sunday, October 4th at 2 pm.
Digital passes are $25 and available by calling the box office at 239.218.0481 or clicking the button below.
Directed by Annette Trossbach, with Assistant Director Gil Perez. Sponsored by Arlene Foreman.

Prestigious Edison Awards coming to Fort Myers in 2021

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Aug. 27, 2020) – The Horizon Council and Horizon Foundation and City of Fort Myers are proud to announce a joint partnership to sponsor and host the highly-acclaimed international Edison Awards in the heart of Fort Myers over the next three seasons. Beginning April 21-23, 2021 and continuing through spring 2024, the Edison Awards will take place at the new Luminary Hotel and Co. and Caloosa Sound Convention Center in the downtown Fort Myers River District.
“Bringing the internationally recognized Edison Awards and its high caliber of award-winning entrepreneurs to the City of Fort Myers where Thomas Edison maintained his winter home is a very big deal,” said City of Fort Myers Manager Saeed Kazemi, P.E. “We look forward to welcoming everyone to our beautiful City of Palms.”
As part of the agreement with Edison Universe, the Horizon Foundation and Horizon Council will contribute $150,000 over a three-year period and the City of Fort Myers and Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) will do the same. The groups will also assist the Edison Awards in securing another $50,000 from area businesses for each event year.
“The Horizon Foundation couldn’t be more excited and honored to extend our global reach with the Edison Awards, which will bring business leaders and tourism dollars from all over the world to our area,” said Horizon Foundation President Dan Eveloff.
Of special significance for Fort Myers is having the Edison Awards come to a place where Thomas Edison had a family home and laboratory. The Edison and Ford Winter Estates are visited by more than 250,000 guests each year and are located less than one mile from the Caloosa Sound Convention Center.
Named after inventor Thomas Edison, the Edison Awards have recognized and honored some of the most innovative new products, services and business leaders from around the world since 1987. The awards personify the persistence, excellence and human drive for innovation, creativity and ingenuity long personified by the famous inventor.
“We are thrilled that the Edison Awards are moving to downtown Fort Myers where Thomas Edison’s greatest innovations originated over 150 years ago,” stated Executive Director of the Edison Awards Frank Bonafilia. “The future of Fort Myers is bright with robust start-up and global companies that are leading the charge in enhancing the quality of life, increasing sustainability, and improving educational technology.”
Each year, more than 150 companies from all over the world are honored with an Edison Award, ranging from small start-ups to Fortune 500 companies. General Electric, IBM, Cisco and Lockheed Martin Corp. are just a few of the notable past Edison Award winners. In addition, one or more individuals is presented with the Edison Achievement Award each year for their significant and lasting contribution to the world of innovation through their career, leadership and achievements. Elon Musk of Tesla Motors & SpaceX, Steve Jobs of Apple, Ted Turner of Time Warner, and Martha Stewart of MSL Omnimedia are a few of the past honorees.
“We are proud to host the prestigious Edison Awards and hope attendees can draw inspiration and historical context from visiting our city,” said Mayor Randy Henderson.
By connecting with more than 7,000 companies from around the world during each nomination season, the Edison Awards are on the cutting edge of identifying emerging trends and market developments. Nominations receive an unbiased, high-powered, focus group review by the Edison Awards Steering Committee comprised of hand-picked industry experts from a spectrum of disciplines.
Commissioner Ray Sandelli, the county’s liaison to the Horizon Council, said “Lee County welcomes the Edison Awards to our community, highlighting our legacy of entrepreneurship and innovation.  This partnership exemplifies the business, cultural, and civic initiative that makes our county a destination for forward-thinking visitors and residents from around the world, building on our vibrant community .  We consider this an amazing opportunity to recognize Lee County’s past through the works of Thomas Edison and his contribution to the United States economy, by celebrating present innovators at the Edison Awards.”

P.J. Scheiner honored as one of Southwest Florida’s young leaders

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Sept. 3, 2020) – Preston J. “P.J.” Scheiner, attorney with Associates and Bruce L. Scheiner, Attorneys for the Injured, has been named to the prestigious 40 Under 40 list published by Gulfshore Business magazine.
Each year, the magazine recognizes 40 business professionals younger than 40 who are among the area’s most distinguished leaders. This is the 18th year Gulfshore Business has honored these professionals in Southwest Florida.
P.J. Scheiner was also recently named to the esteemed list of Florida Super Lawyers. Each year, Super Lawyers recognizes the top lawyers in Florida through a multiphase selection process involving peer nomination and evaluation, as well as independent research.
P.J. Scheiner’s passion and dedication to his profession are key reasons why he is on the 2020 list. That, and the sage advice from his father, and longtime Fort Myers attorney, Bruce. “My father often told me of a local legal legend named Jimmy Franklin, who could walk into a courtroom, tell the judge what the law was, and-without even reading the case establishing the law or precedent-the court would usually accept his representation and rule accordingly,” said P.J. “My father’s advice was to earn the respect of the local bar and judiciary so that like Jimmy Franklin-when I made a representation in the courtroom, no one would ever have reason to question or doubt its accuracy, integrity or veracity.”
P.J. Scheiner’s commitment to his clients extends into the courtroom, where he has helped secure multi-million dollar jury verdicts on behalf of clients who suffered devastating injuries caused by someone else’s negligence or carelessness.
P.J. Scheiner has served as a trial lawyer since 2007, working alongside his father, Bruce L. Scheiner.  His devotion to the community shines bright in his efforts for water quality, serving on the board of Captains for Clean Water. He also takes a leading role in his firm’s efforts to help Southwest Florida youth, presenting the annual Make a Difference Award, which recognizes a student from every participating middle and high school in Lee, Collier, Charlotte and Hendry counties for volunteering or engaging in community projects.
Associates and Bruce L. Scheiner, Attorneys for the Injured, was founded in 1971 by Bruce L. Scheiner and his wife, Cheryl Scheiner. Both continue to work alongside their son, P.J. Scheiner, who joined the firm as a trial attorney in 2007.
Today, Bruce and P.J. work in the negotiating room and the courtroom, where they fight to secure full and fair restitution for each and every client they have the privilege of representing. Bruce Scheiner still hand selects each case the firm accepts, personally assembles the team best able to see the case through to settlement or trial, and oversees every case from intake to resolution.
Associates and Bruce L. Scheiner, Attorneys for the Injured, has the knowledge, experience and resources to handle all types of personal injury and wrongful death claims for clients across the state of Florida, including trucking accidents, boating accidents, airplane accidents, nursing home neglect and abuse, construction accidents, defective product claims, premise liability claims and injuries to children.

GrowFL names Priority Marketing as finalist for 2020 ‘Florida Companies to Watch’

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Sept. 2, 2020) – Priority Marketing has been named among Florida’s top-ranked businesses as a finalist in GrowFL’s 2020 Florida Companies to Watch recognition program.

Now in its 10th year, Companies to Watch honors impressive second-stage companies that are developing valuable products and services, creating quality jobs, enriching communities and broadening new industries throughout Florida. GrowFL has recognized only 80 Florida-based businesses as finalists for the 2020 awards program, selected from more than 400 nominations statewide. Priority Marketing is one of just four Southwest Florida businesses to be named finalists.

“GrowFL received more than 400 nominations this year, and it’s gratifying to know that we’re not just regarded as a successful business in Southwest Florida, but across all of Florida,” said Teri Hansen, APR, president and creative director at Priority Marketing. “Our company has grown to over 40 employees that are working tirelessly to help our clients and partners achieve their marketing, public relations and advertising goals.”

“We applaud these first-round finalists who have proved themselves to be stand out companies in the state,” said GrowFL Founder Tom O’Neal. “They have and continue to demonstrate the resiliency and tenacity that comes along with being an entrepreneur. We know this year hasn’t been easy, so we’re excited to recognize our state’s admirable business owners and their teams. I have a feeling they’re just getting started.”

Together, the 80 finalists represent nearly 3,000 jobs and generate $670 million in annual revenue. On average, the companies anticipate growth of 13% in revenue and 23% in employment by the end of 2020.

Companies to Watch was developed by the Edward Lowe Foundation as a unique way to recognize and honor second-stage companies that demonstrate high performance in the marketplace with innovative strategies and processes. In addition to evaluating past growth and projected success, applicant companies are judged according to their special strengths and impact in their markets, communities and within the state – thus deeming them “worth watching.”

GrowFL will name its 2020 honorees on Nov. 12.

Steve said, “We are delighted to work with Randy Borges’ Waterline Systems of North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and Hubert, North Carolina, to manufacture Colgate 26 sailboats.” Steve continued, “Waterline Systems is the perfect builder for Colgate 26s as they currently build the Alerion yacht line, and will provide that same high quality in producing the Colgate 26, known as The Boat For All Reasons because it is so versatile and safe in all wind and sea conditions.” The Colgate 26 replaced Solings in Offshore Sailing School’s fleet in 1997, when it was named Cruising World magazine’s “Boat of the Year.” The Colgate 26 was originally manufactured by Precision BoatWorks in Palmetto, Fla. Interested parties may contact Steve Colgate at 239-985-7505. For more information, visit www.Colgate26.com.
Today, there are close to 400 Colgate 26 boats sailing and racing throughout the United States and in sailing areas including Qatar, through a combination of private owners, other sailing schools, yacht club fleets, the US Naval Academy, and several other service institutions. Offshore Sailing School currently owns 17 Colgate 26 sailboats, used for sailing lessons, basic Learn to Sail certification courses, intermediate Performance Sailing courses and racing events, team building and leadership development sailing programs.

Quigley Eye Specialists to Open The Q LASIK & MED SPA in Naples

Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Stephen Prendiville Appointed Medical Director
FORT MYERS, FLA., August 27, 2020 – Quigley Eye Specialists announced plans today to offer patients LASIK and advanced aesthetic services through its first LASIK and medical spa in Naples, opening in October, 2020.
The division will be called The Q LASIK & MED SPA and will be located at 675 Piper Boulevard in North Naples next to the Quigley Eye Specialists ophthalmology clinic. The Q LASIK & MED SPA will be directed by board certified and fellowship trained facial plastic surgeon Dr. Stephen Prendiville, who recently joined the Quigley Eye Specialists team.
The luxurious 2,000 square-foot LASIK & Med spa will offer advanced anti-aging procedures including leading edge lasers, facial contouring, injectables, and medical facials and peels.  Dr. Prendiville also will offer consultations for surgical procedures such as facelifts, neck lifts, rhinoplasty, brow lifts and eyelid surgery.
“The Q LASIK & MED SPA will be the first med spa to offer aesthetic injectables such as fillers, Botox, and laser treatments, in addition to offering LASIK, a dry eye spa and a range of other elective services. One of the greatest concerns for aesthetic patients is to receive the best treatments available based on their activity level, social life, and future goals.  Comprehensive aesthetic consultations will help prospective patients look good, look natural, and feel good,” said Dr. Prendiville.
The LASIK team will consist of Dr. Duane Wiggins and Dr. Emmanuel Kai-Lewis who are both highly skilled and experienced LASIK and refractive surgeons. Board certified ophthalmologist and fellowship trained LASIK surgeon, Dr. Duane Wiggins, has more than 20 years of experience in LASIK and refractive surgery and will perform these procedures at The Q LASIK & MED SPA. Dr. Emmanuel Kai-Lewis is a board certified fellowship trained cornea and refractive surgeon with more than a decade of experience will also perform LASIK, PRK and other refractive procedures at The Q LASIK & MED SPA.
“Many people in Southwest Florida are interested in seeing great without glasses. To help us give them their best possible vision, we have invested in the iDesign Refractive Studio from Johnson & Johnson. This advanced technology helps us map the cornea with precision. It can also give us pinpoint control of the LASIK procedure. That’s a very important consideration for correcting nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, since every cornea is unique and has a slightly different shape,” explains Dr. Kai-Lewis.
In addition to LASIK and aesthetic services, one of the specialties of The Q LASIK & MED SPA will be the Dry Eye Spa, which will offer advanced technology to treat chronic dry eye.
“When the meibomian glands in the eyelids don’t secrete enough oil into the tears, the glands become clogged. The traditional way to unclog them is to apply high heat compresses and express them to open them back up. This can be very painful. What we do instead is use the newest technology to massage the eye area with 108-degree thermal heat that will melt away waxy deposits in the glands and apply enough pressure to the eyelid to open the glands,” adds Dr. Wiggins.
Dr. Wiggins said The Q LASIK & MED SPA will be the first spa in the area to combine advanced technology to massage eyes, treat chronic dry eye and offer Lasik surgery all under one roof. In addition to medical professionals, The Q LASIK & MED SPA will have aestheticians offering anti-aging procedures using the latest skin care technology.
Quigley Eye Specialists decided to open a medical spa as a logical next step in its growth as one of the nation’s leading multispecialty ophthalmology practices.
“Adding a cosmetic and anti-aging center to our practice makes sense for us and for our patients,” said Quigley Eye Specialists Founder and cataract “super specialist” surgeon Dr. Thomas Quigley. “When patients are able to see better, they notice things in the mirror that they hadn’t seen before.  With our cosmetic surgery division, we can help patients love what they see even more.”
The Q LASIK & MED SPA is accepting appointments ahead of its opening and offering early booking specials by calling 239-466-2020. You may also learn more by visiting QuigleyEye.com.

Beloved Pop Top Program Fizzles Out

FORT MYERS, FL (July 22, 2020)- Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Southwest Florida has announced plans to suspend its popular “tab program” for the foreseeable future. The tiny pull tab is the only pure aluminum on a soda can and in large quantities has value to recyclers. People of all ages have collected the pop tabs and have lovingly delivered their precious stash to the Ronald McDonald House in baggies, cartons, boxes, and five-gallon jugs filled to the brim.  Their efforts have raised monies that have helped to supplement the Charities’ House operations.
“Collecting tabs is such a sweet gesture and we know it is a way of life for many of our generous supporters” said Laura Ragain, executive director.  “We will always be grateful for the incredible community support we’ve enjoyed for so many years.  This decision was not made lightly, but in light of the pandemic and for the safety and comfort level of our wonderful volunteers who clean and transport the tabs, it’s the responsible thing to do.”
