Annual holiday event collects donations to provide gifts for local families in need

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Dec. 6, 2022) – ‘Tis the season of giving, and the Children’s Advocacy Center of Southwest Florida (CACSWFL) kicked it off with its Spirit of Giving Holiday Event on Nov. 19. The CAC highlights this time of year by collecting holiday gifts and donations for the children and families they serve across Southwest Florida. The sponsorships for the event will help bring joy to the children and families CACSWFL serves in the Southwest Florida community.

The event was held at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre, which is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this season. Will Prather, Broadway Palm Owner, and Executive Producer, sponsored the event to help make an impact locally. “I wanted to give back to the community that has been there for me and Broadway Palm over the years,” says Prather. “I’ve selected a partner for each of our productions this season and what better partner during the holiday show than Children’s Advocacy Center? This organization does so much for our community, and I am thrilled to be a small part of their season of giving this year.”

The CAC is hosting two programs to collect gifts for at-risk families for the holidays. Adopt-A-Family and Toy Drive donations can be made Monday- Friday 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., until Dec. 16 at the following locations:

  • Children’s Advocacy Center, 3830 Evans Ave., Fort Myers,
  • Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre, 1380 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers,
  • Henderson, Franklin, Starnes & Holt, P.A, 1715 Monroe St., Fort Myers,
  • Markham Norton Mosteller & Wright, 8961 Conference Dr., Ste. 1, Fort Myers,
  • Seed & Bean Market, 1520 Broadway Cir., #107, Fort Myers and
  • Cape Coral Police Department, 1100 Cultural Park Blvd., Cape Coral.

Hurricane Ian brought abundant stress into the lives of Southwest Florida families. Children are no exception, as their routines have been disrupted due to displacement from their homes and schools, dealing with family financial stress, and school being out of session. As the aftermath of Hurricane Ian still impacts SWFL this holiday season, donating is more crucial than ever. Donating to the CAC this season will bring holiday joy to children in our community.

The CAC sponsors include Bobby Nichols Fiddlesticks Charity Foundation; Storm Smart; Office of the Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno; Florida Gulf Coast University Marieb College of Health and Human Services; CRS Technology Consultants; Barraco & Associates; B&I Contractors; Merrill Lynch-Clinger, Sizemore, and Associates; Iron Ridge Insurance Services; Seed & Bean Market; Dr. Martin & Betteann Sherman and John & Christine Pearson.

The Children’s Advocacy Center CEO, Julie Boudreaux, thanks their sponsors and encourages the community to support families in need. “We gave over 300 gifts last year thanks to the outpouring of donations from the community and can’t wait to see this year’s impact with the support of our wonderful sponsors,” says Boudreaux. “The CAC and these families are so appreciative of the help The CACSWFL helps countless families with the assistance of its supporters.

Is Semaglutide the answer to your New Year’s resolution?

Expert discusses the pros and cons of trendy weight loss drug

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Dec. 6, 2022) – As we approach the end of 2022 countless numbers of people are making their resolutions to lose weight in 2023, and of those numbers many will fail in their quest. But is a trendy drug therapy the answer? Many adults are now turning to Semaglutide, a drug therapy with a successful track record for dropping weight.

“Semaglutide is a GLP-1 agonist, mimicking the actions of GLP-1,” explained Dr. Melissa (Mel) Irvine, DNP. “GLP-1 is a hormone primarily produced by the gut, but it also is produced by the pancreas and nervous system. It works by targeting the brain to regulate appetite, especially after eating. It also slows how quickly the stomach empties, which helps you feel fuller longer and reduces how much you feel the need to eat.”

Semaglutide typically comes in the form of three name brands, each is FDA approved for specific conditions:

Ozempic is an injection used to lower blood sugar levels in those with type 2 diabetes. It is intended to be used in conjunction with diet and exercise and may also be used for patients with cardiovascular disease to help lower the risk of stroke or heart attack.

Wegovy is an injection used for appetite management for individuals with a high BMI and weight-related health conditions.

Rybelsus is a tablet used to help lower blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes, along with diet and exercise.

“Research into semaglutide for weight loss has shown many benefits,” says Dr. Mel. “GLP-1 agonists have been researched for over 16 years, consistently showing results for reducing body weight in patients with and without diabetes. Semaglutide has been shown to be superior in promoting body weight reduction compared to other GLP-1 agonists.”

While semaglutide can help with weight loss, the greatest results are seen when combined with healthy lifestyle changes, namely, reduced calorie intake, increasing regular exercise, and getting behavioral therapy. Our eating habits are primarily based on pre-set behaviors. Behavioral therapy can help break those habits and forge newer and healthier ones and help identify mental barriers to weight loss.

As you ponder yet another New Year’s resolution to lose weight, you may be considering semaglutide to help get you started. Semaglutide helps give a boost when establishing good habits, but it is not something patients can remain on for a lifetime. Also, as with any medication, there are risks. The most common side effect is nausea, which Dr. Mel says often occurs because the patient is hungry and doesn’t know it. She says it can be managed by eating a small healthy snack until it gradually subsides.

“The body still requires nourishment, you just won’t have the same appetite, so you need to remember to eat and make sure it’s healthy, nutritious calories that will give the body what it needs to function at its best. Your provider can help you create a plan for food choices and calorie intake to ensure you are still meeting a healthy level of nutrition.”

Another side effect Dr. Mel notes is the hit to your bank account. “The name brand can run $1200 to $2000, which will last six to 10 weeks. Semaglutide is the generic version for a fraction of the cost, which is great; but again, it doesn’t do any good if you’re not also changing your eating habits and increasing your activity level.”

Dr. Mel performs a thorough evaluation of blood work, including a hormone panel, and a physical examination during a patient’s first appointment to truly understand their needs and develop a comprehensive plan to restore optimal health and overall quality of life. Valerie’s House Founder Angela Melvin Appears

On National Television

FORT MYERS, Fla. – December 2, 2022 – Angela Melvin, founder and CEO of Valerie’s House, was a special guest on “Live With Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest” on WINK-TV today.

Melvin said she received a call November 22 from the show’s producers, asking if she would be available for the interview as their Good News story.

The six-minute interview was done via Zoom from the Valerie’s House location in downtown Fort Myers.

As a result of the interview, Melvin said she has received dozens of calls and emails asking about Valerie’s House and how callers can have a Valerie’s House in their community.  The Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest show also donated $5,000 to Valerie’s House to continue their good work.

“It was a great experience as I was able to tell the Valerie’s House story to a national audience and spread the word about how to help children grieve the loss of a loved one,” Melvin said after the interview.

Valerie’s House first opened its doors with 20 children and their caregivers on the evening of January 11, 2016, in a small house in downtown Fort Myers.  Since then, the organization has grown to help more than 2,000 children and expanded into three additional locations across Southwest Florida, including Naples, Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte and its newest location in Pensacola.

The interview came on the heels of National Children’s Grief Awareness Month in November. One in seven children in Florida is predicted to lose a parent or sibling before the age of 25, according to the 2021 Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model.

In addition to talking about the founding of Valerie’s House, Melvin discussed the Pay It Forward vision of Valerie’s House where teens who have gone through the program then come back and mentor other grieving children.

Ryan and Kelly also asked Melvin about Valerie’s House expanding throughout the state and nationally.  Melvin replied, “We know there are many places around the country that are without grief support services for children and if we can help other communities start something similar to Valerie’s House, we will do so.”

Valerie’s House provides a safe, comfortable place for children and their families to heal together following the death of someone they love. Valerie’s House offers support groups and other activities at a home on 1762 Fowler Street in Fort Myers and a home in Naples at 819 Myrtle Terrace. Valerie’s House also holds group meetings in Charlotte County at First United Methodist Church in Punta Gorda at 507 W. Marion Ave. and at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church at 2565 Tamiami Trail in Port Charlotte.  Support services are also offered in Pensacola. Valerie’s House is a United Way partner agency and is fully supported by community donations.  More information can be found at www.valerieshouse.org.
