Valerie’s House Celebrates Fifth Anniversary

FORT MYERS, Fla. – February 9, 2021 – Valerie’s House, a nonprofit organization in Southwest Florida helping children grieve, is celebrating its fifth year of providing grief support services to Southwest Florida with a year-long celebration throughout 2021.
Valerie’s House will be sharing “Then and Now” stories of growth and healing from children that have attended Valerie’s House over the years. Various news stories, behind the scenes videos of Valerie’s House, and family and volunteer testimonials will be highlighted.  Additionally, local businesses and other organizations have “adopted” Valerie’s House on social media and in their communications in an effort to increase awareness of the importance of helping grieving children.
“When we first opened Valerie’s House in 2016, I would often get asked if there were enough children in our community grieving to need a place like Valerie’s House,” said Angela Melvin, Founder & CEO of Valerie’s House. “I knew there was, but they didn’t have a voice.  In the last five years, I can say that we have now given them a voice. We are so very grateful for the community for supporting us these past five years and helping us fill the void in grief support for children in our community.”
Valerie’s House first opened its doors with 20 children and their caregivers on the evening of January 11, 2016 in a small house in downtown Fort Myers.  Since then, the organization has grown to help more than 1,000 children and expanded into three locations across Southwest Florida, including now Naples and Punta Gorda.
All throughout 2021, the community is encouraged to share personal stories of their experiences attending Valerie’s House, volunteering, and the impact the organization has had on their lives by using the hashtag  #VHTurns5 on social channels, or by emailing their story to Valerie’s House Communications Coordinator Alexa Nargi at [email protected].
Plans also are in the works for the construction of a much-needed Forever Home for grieving families of Southwest Florida that will be built on property donated by the City of Fort Myers. For more information on how you can help bring this home to life, please contact Angela Melvin at [email protected].
One in nine children in Florida is predicted to lose a parent or sibling before the age of 21, according to the 2020 Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model.
Valerie’s House provides a safe, comfortable place for children and their families to heal together following the death of someone they love. Valerie’s House offers support groups and other activities at a home on 1762 Fowler Street in Fort Myers and a home in Naples at 819 Myrtle Terrace. Valerie’s House also holds group meetings at First United Methodist Church in Punta Gorda. Valerie’s House is a United Way partner agency and is fully supported by community donations.  More information can be found at www.valerieshouse.org.

Millennium Physician Group Teams Up with NBC2 to Offer New Destination for Accurate COVID-19 Information

Fort Myers, Florida, February 6, 2021:
Millennium Physician Group has created a new destination for Southwest Florida to get accurate and actionable COVID-19 information by launching a weekly TV news report called Destination Health, airing every Saturday, during NBC2’s 6 pm newscast. The video segments, produced by an award-winning team with more than two decades combined medical reporting experience, present timely health, wellness, and medical information with a focus on all aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“There is so much misinformation out there, especially regarding COVID-19,” says Millennium Chief Medical Officer Alejandro Perez-Trepichio, MD. “The information is changing so rapidly, it’s hard for people to know what’s true. We wanted to give everyone a place to find accurate information they could trust. At the end of the day, it’s important for the community to have a good source of reliable medical information, and this partnership allows us to provide that.”
Local physicians and medical experts from Millennium Physician Group as well as throughout Florida are featured in the Destination Health segments, reporting valuable information and insights about COVID-19, as well as bringing viewers inspiring stories from the frontlines of fighting this virus.
“We are thrilled to be working with the distinguished group of healthcare professionals at Millennium Physician Group,” says Vice President of News, Digital, Marketing and Production for Waterman Broadcasting of Florida Darrel Lieze-Adams. “Providing our community with vital health-related information is a long-standing pillar of our daily news coverage on NBC2. This partnership is a key element of continuing to build on that commitment.”
Millennium is not just coming to your TVs, but also to your radios and streaming devices. A second new destination for relevant health news is Destination Health Radio. Every week, host Michelle McCormick takes you on a healthcare journey, interviewing physicians, experts, and patients from across Florida in order to help listeners achieve their best health.
Brought to you by Millennium Physician Group, a new episode of Destination Health Radio broadcasts every Saturday on WOKV 104.5FM from 5 – 6 pm in Jacksonville, but you can listen to the podcast of the show anytime, anywhere by heading to destinationhealthradio.buzzsprout.com.

Event organizers take it to the street to ensure a safe, socially-distanced event

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Feb. 11, 2021) – Blessings in a Backpack SWFL’s inaugural ‘Brews for Blessings’ is garnering tremendous support and excitement from the community. Because of the overwhelming interest in this event hosted at Millennial Brewing Company, Royal Palm Ave. near the family-friendly brewery will be closed on Saturday, Feb. 27, from 3:00 – 7:30 p.m.
The street closure will provide extra space to ensure a socially-distanced, safe event for everyone. Attendees are encouraged to wear masks or face coverings, observe social distancing guidelines, and bring their own chairs to enjoy the outdoor fun while supporting a valued nonprofit.
This free event was created for families with young kids and will feature a special children’s area with a bounce house, face painting, games, and the Sno-Ball Pelican truck serving snow cones. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office will offer fingerprinting and deputy badges, and will have a squad car on site for the kids to check out.
Adults will find a large selection of brews, food trucks, a silent auction, and live entertainment featuring local favorite Electric Lipstick. This high-energy, female-fronted band plays rock, dance, and funk and guarantees to leave attendees electrified.
In addition to offering food and fun, ‘Brews for Blessings’ is designed to help educate young families in our community about Blessings in a Backpack SWFL and allow them an opportunity to help feed a child for a school year. A donation of only $115 will provide meals for 36 weekends for one school-age child. Due to various circumstances, including COVID-19, local school meal programs have seen the need for weekend meals increase, while funding and donations have declined. To combat this, ‘Brews for Blessings’ will serve to increase community awareness, raise funds and have fun.
Sponsors for the event include: Title Sponsor Premiere Plus Realty; Barraco & Associates; Rohrman Electric; Youngquist Brothers, Neubert Construction Services, Sawyer Smith, Jones, Haber & Rollings; Colonial Roofing; D.R. Horton; TM Strategic Consulting; Lee Drywall; Sanibel Captiva Community Bank; Universal Engineering Sciences; First Florida Integrity Bank; Your Team @ Schooner Realty; LandQwest; Pulte Group; Chris-Tel Construction; Spiro & Associates; Millennial Brewing Company; CONRIC pr + marketing; Something Borrowed Event Rentals and Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
Additional sponsors are appreciated. Packages are available and range from $500 to $2,500 and include drink tickets, website link and logo, signage, swag, and access to the VIP area. To become a ‘Brews for Blessings’ sponsor, contact Cecilia St. Arnold for details at 239-410-9592 or [email protected]. All monies received go directly to providing meals for food-insecure kids.
Blessings in a Backpack’s mission is to mobilize communities, individuals, and resources to help provide food for local school children who might otherwise go hungry. During the school week, these children are fed by federal government programs, but meals are not provided on weekends.
A leader in the movement to end childhood hunger, Blessings in a Backpack SWFL makes sure school-age children receive nutritional meals over the weekend during the school year. Every Friday afternoon, each child receives a backpack filled with nutritious, kid-friendly, ready-to-eat items. They return the backpacks on Monday, and each is filled and ready for the next weekend.
Millennial Brewing Company is located at 1811 Royal Palm Ave. in the Fort Myers River District.
Blessings in a Backpack helps prevent childhood hunger
Blessings in a Backpack serves 5,000 students through 24 school-based programs located throughout Lee and Collier Counties. In these schools, test scores, reading skills, positive behavior, general health, and school attendance have improved dramatically due in part to students receiving the nourishment they need throughout the week and the weekends.
Kids are our future; you can help secure theirs. A $115 donation will feed a child for one full school year. Gifts of all sizes are welcome through the donations portal at https://swfl.blessingsinabackpack.org/ or via mail at P.O. Box 61402 Fort Myers, FL 33906. All contributions are tax-deductible.

A lively lecture about your favorite thing: art

A Woman of Vision: Peggy Guggenheim – Online Art Lecture

Thursday, March 18 • Peggy Guggenheim was a daring, charismatic and intelligent woman who knew a thing or two about art and artists (after all, she was married to Max Ernst). Peggy led one of the great uncategorizable 20th-century lives. Poor little rich girl? Sexual libertine? Scandalous memoirist? Parisian emigre? Venetian doyenne? Influential art collector? Even more influential gallery owner? All of the above.

Join art historian Kevin Costello as we examine her life and her idiosyncratic collection.
Seeing is Believing: How to Look at a Masterpiece – Online Art Lecture

Thursday, April 15 • Join art historian Kevin Costello as he examines masterpieces by Titian, Rembrandt, Francois Boucher, Jean-Auguste Ingres, Edgar Degas, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Jackson Pollock, David Hockney, and Anselm Kiefer.
Sisters: 21st Century Female Artists – Online Art Lecture

Thursday, May 13 • The increased importance of female artists on the international arena of contemporary art is becoming more evident to historians and collectors alike. Be introduced to 21st century female artists and explore their influence on contemporary art during this surprising and stunning lecture.
Call for Entries: Art Lives Here Billboard Campaign

Deadline: March 12 • Our Art Lives Here campaign creates more art for more people by displaying artwork on billboards throughout southwest Florida, transforming advertising space into public art for and by our talented local artists! We want to bring YOUR art outside the traditional context of museum and gallery walls – submit your work for the chance to have it displayed on billboards around southwest Florida!
Mosaic and Stained Glass – Onsite Class

Saturdays, February 27 – March 13 • Learn basic glass cutting skills and glass laying techniques to create and generate special, unique mosaic and stained glass techniques! These are relaxed, fun, no pressure, hands-on sessions that allow you to explore a wonderfully meditative art form.
Palette Knife Painting – Onsite, Two Day Workshop

Two-Day Workshop, March 15 – 16 • This information-packed workshop is designed to give a good foundation for bold, direct palette knife painting, accommodating beginner to advanced painters! Class begins with a demonstration focusing on the most direct and effective methods for painting strong, vibrant oils using painting knives and a limited palette. Afterwards, participants will paint from their own photography or may choose to paint from one of the large photos provided for them by the instructor.
The Portrait Sketch in Three Colors (Trois Crayons) – Onsite Class

Saturday, March 20 • This workshop focuses on the classical method of using three tones: red, black and white to create the illusion of form and atmosphere through tone. A favored method of Renaissance and Venetian artists, this approach to drawing using three colors (“trioscouleurs”) is an important historical aspect of 19th century and modern atelier practice.
Virtual Field Trip: New York Guggenheim Museum – Hilma af Klint Exhibit: Paintings for the Future

Saturday, March 20 • Head to the Big Apple and (virtually) experience the iconic Guggenheim Museum with your friends from the Alliance. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity lets you spend intimate time with Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future exhibition.

Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) is a long under-recognized innovator of abstract art. Her Paintings for the Future is one of the Guggenheim’s most popular exhibitions.

Performances February 11 – 20 • You deserve a laugh, so come and join us for a responsibly distanced evening of theatre outside on our GreenMarket lawn! This production is a series of three short one-act comedies including The Role of Della by Nina Shengold, a riveting and riotous look at the contemporary audition process, giving new meaning to the term stealing a scene; The Great Waitresses by Nina Shengold, where four women serve up some funny guidance as they explain what it takes to be a great waitress; and The Wedding Story by Julianne Homokay, a hilarious and horrifying retelling of a love story.
Stories of Love: An Evening with Local Storytellers on the GreenMarket Lawn

Thursday, February 25 • When was the last time that a story transported you into another world?
