Note to Media: Floridians with intellectual and developmental disabilities have been forced to deal with sharp declines in funding for programs that assist them. Reimbursement rates for providers are no longer offsetting the cost of care, making it difficult for organizations to retain qualified caregivers. Several prominent advocacy groups, provider organizations, individuals and families from across Florida have formed a coalition to give those with disabilities a greater voice in the decisions that impact them the most. The gathering on Monday is the first step in an effort to empower people with intellectual and developmental disabilities with the information and resources necessary to meet the crisis head-on.
WHAT: Representatives from several agencies along with political and community leaders are among the 80-100 people expected to attend the coalition’s initial organizing session.
WHEN: Monday, July 9, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
WHERE: Talking Books Library, 1651 Lee Street, Fort Myers
WHY: The goal is to promote a collaborative and coordinated approach to public policy issues that affect the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
