A Quick Note from Ryan, Director of Marketing, Gulf Coast Symphony.
Hi, this is Ryan, Director of Marketing for the Gulf Coast Symphony.
I wanted to send you a personal note about our next production, Songs for a New World. Songs for a New World is one of my favorite contemporary shows. It was written by Jason Robert Brown (the same writer who created The Last Five Years, the 2014 movie featuring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan), and is a totally different TYPE of musical theatre show.
What makes Songs for a New World different is that it’s actually a song cycle rather than a traditional musical. Unlike a musical where the characters are consistent throughout and the entire production follows one story line, Songs for a New World has constantly changing characters, all centered around the idea of one moment—that singular moment that is a jumping off point where there’s no going back.
You can see what I mean in the song “Stars and the Moon.” This piece centers around a woman chasing a relationship that has what she thinks she wants (riches & glam) and passing up on a humble relationship that offered her the stars and the moon. It’s about the one moment where she passed on that humility that changed her life and the piece ends with her lament that “I’ll never have the moon.” It’s truly a touching piece that reminds the audience that choices have consequences and hindsight is 20-20. This is just one example of the incredible stories that Jason Robert Brown has woven together in this production. Like I mentioned, it’s truly one of my favorite shows.
And to make things even better, our cast is AMAZING. I was able to listen in on their rehearsal yesterday and just WOW—this cast is full of incredible talent! Meet the cast →
I sincerely hope you will join us for our production of Songs for a New World at our new Music & Arts Community Center in Fort Myers. You won’t be disappointed.
Ryan Davis Director of Marketing Songs for a New World April 7-17 | 7:00 PM From the writer and composer who created “The Last Five Years”—we proudly present Jason Robert Brown’s “Songs for a New World.” Songs for a New World is about one moment. It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back. With a rousing score that blends elements of pop, gospel and jazz, featuring tight harmonies and darling vocals, Songs for a New World transports audiences from the deck of a Spanish sailing ship bound for a new land, to the ledge of a New York penthouse.
