Biography & History Lectures The Regency and King George IV June 9 | 1:30 – 3pm | Monday Bentley Village Like father, like son? Not in this case! George III, rigidly disciplined and principled, did his best to raise similarly conscientious sons, but no one could harness his first- born, the wayward, profligate Prince of Wales, whose disreputable life threatened the very survival of the monarchy. Yet as George III’s sanity collapsed, the English had no choice but to establish the prince as regent in his father’s place. What was the Prince Regent, the future George IV really like? His life is a tale of family fric- tion, loyalty, exuberance, patronage, pettiness, and generosity – not to mention scandal! American Overseas Cemeteries from World War I and World War II: From Normandy to the Rest of the World June 5 | 3:30 – 5pm | Thursday Siena Lakes Join professional photographer and former Navy Officer for a visit to the 23 overseas WWI and WWII military cemeteries and hear the stories of the men and women who have never returned. Mr. Sherman recently published, “Never Home: Remembering the Military Heroes Who Never Returned,” which in- cludes more than 225 photographs from all our overseas cemeteries and 54 biographies of our fallen heroes. Learn about the cemeteries, their associated battles, and learn the names and life stories of a few of the more than 207,000 individuals buried overseas. And never forget. What Makes a Criminal Justice System Work? June 24 | 10 – 11:30am | Thursday FGCU Main Campus – Building AB9 (Room 106) This lecture explores the key elements that contribute to a fair and effective system of justice. We will examine successful practices including police, court and correct- ional innovations. Which of these help to reduce crime? For example, does the use of police body cameras affect local crime rates and should police use military tac- tics and weapons in high crime areas? This lecture also examines relatively new concepts such as restorative justice, evidence-based sentencing, and the role of community policing. This lecture focuses on factors that promote fairness, reduce recidivism, and foster trust in legal institutions. Charlemagne: The Carolingian Empire September 25 | 10 – 11:30am | Thursday Bentley Village In a review of European history from the fall of the Roman Empire to Napoleon Bonaparte, one figure clearly stands out. Charlemagne was an extraordinary ruler in the Middle Ages whose influence shaped the future of western Europe. Charlemagne was a warrior King, and Emperor, an administrator, a leader, a military strategist, and a conqueror. He was also a devout Christian, and he combined his military power with his religious beliefs to ensure the survival and expansion of Christianity across western Europe. During his life, Charle- magne was the dominant figure in a complex world of intrigue, political and religious tur- moil, and nearly constant warfare. This presentation will examine the amazing life of this powerful King of the Franks, who rose to become the Holy Roman Emperor.
