West Side Story: The Musical That Changed Broadway Forever

How West Side Story Redefined Musical Theater

When West Side Story premiered on Broadway in 1957, it revolutionized
musical theater. With its bold storytelling, electrifying choreography, and
unforgettable score, the show took audiences by storm, offering a raw
and emotional take on love, rivalry, and tragedy. More than six decades
later, its themes remain as powerful and relevant as ever.

This March, the Gulf Coast Symphony brings West Side Story to life at the
Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall. Before you experience the show,
take a look at what makes this musical a true masterpiece.

A Modern-Day Romeo and Juliet

Inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story transforms the
classic tale into a story of forbidden love set in 1950s New York City. Instead
of feuding families, the conflict plays out between two rival street gangs: the
Jets, composed of white working-class youth, and the Sharks, a group of
Puerto Rican immigrants fighting for their place in America.

At the heart of the story are Tony and Maria—two young lovers from opposite
sides of this divide. Their romance is tender and hopeful, but it unfolds against
a backdrop of rising violence and deep-seated prejudice. With a tragic yet pow-
erful ending, West Side Story reminds us of love’s ability to transcend boundar-
ies, even in the face of hatred.

The Genius Behind the Music and Lyrics

Few musicals boast a creative team as legendary as West Side Story’s:
🎼 Leonard Bernstein – His thrilling and complex score blends jazz, Latin
rhythms, and classical influences, giving the show a sound unlike anything
Broadway had heard before. Songs like Maria, Tonight, Somewhere, and
America remain iconic today.

✍️ Stephen Sondheim – At just 26 years old, he wrote the show’s lyrics, craft-
ing unforgettable lines that perfectly capture young love, heartbreak, and cult-
ural identity. It was his first Broadway credit, launching a career that would re-
define the American musical.

📖 Arthur Laurents – His book for West Side Story brought depth and realism to
the script, giving the characters an emotional complexity that was rare for musicals
at the time.

🩰 Jerome Robbins – As director and choreographer, Robbins introduced dance
as a vital storytelling tool. His electrifying choreography turned gang fights into
ballet-like sequences, making movement as expressive as dialogue.
