Florida Weekly Goes Behind the Scenes of Camelot

An Exclusive Look at Camelot and the Creative Minds Behind It
Running Through February 8th!

Southwest Florida Theatre Company’s innovative take on Camelot was the focus
of a spotlight feature in Florida Weekly. This unique adaptation breathes new life
into the beloved Lerner and Loewe musical, with an eight-person cast and a cham-
ber orchestra comprised of fellowship musicians from the Gulf Coast Symphony.

Director Jeremy Webb and Music Director Julie Bearden Carver have crafted a
production that balances musical elegance with intimate storytelling. “We wanted
to create a production that puts the music and storytelling front and center,” says
Dr. Andrew M. Kurtz, President, CEO, and Music Director. “The chamber ensem-
ble allows us to deliver a richer, more immediate connection between the cast,
the music, and the audience.”

“We wanted to give audiences something unique — a chamber version of
Camelot that remains true to the spirit of the original while offering an inti-
mate and engaging experience.” Dr. Andrew Kurtz, President, CEO & Music
Director

This streamlined approach places greater demands on the performers, who each
play a crucial role in shaping the story’s emotional landscape. “It demands preci-
sion and creativity from each musician,” Carver shared. “Every note counts in
shaping the soundscape of this intimate production.”

Branch Fields, who plays King Arthur, embraced the challenges of the role. “Arthur
is a dream come true,” Fields said. “He’s a character torn between his ideals and the
human realities around him, and that complexity is so rewarding to explore on stage.”
His on-stage counterpart, Elizabeth D’Aiuto as Guinevere, expressed her love for por-
traying such a complex character. “Guinevere is such a layered character,” she remark-
ed. “I love the journey she goes on and the opportunity to connect with audiences on
that emotional level.”

In addition to celebrating the artistry behind Camelot, the article highlights the South-
west Florida Theatre Company’s mission to blend world-class musical theater with live
orchestral music. “Our vision is to provide meaningful cultural experiences that enrich
our community and elevate each performance with live music,” Dr. Kurtz added.
