Current Events Discussion Group (Monthly 2-part series)

January 16, 23 | 10 – 11:30am | Thursday
Online via Zoom

Speaker: John Guerra

In a globalized world, crucial and important topics rise and fall daily. Ripped from
the headlines, this program offers the opportunity for substantive discourse on
the issues and stories shaping local, national and world events. Our goal is to build
consensus, unity and identify practical solutions. Join neighbors, friends and peers,
inperson or online, in this interactive, thought-provoking and engaging discussion
group. We strive to offer a constructive and respectful forum where conservatives
and liberals alike can comfortably and openly share their viewpoints and opinions.
Each week participants receive articles for discussion and, where appropriate, vide-
os are shown to help further our dialog. The best discussions arise from a group of
diverse individuals offering their personal viewpoints and perspectives informed by
their unique life experiences. Together with your opinions and ideas, bring your
listening and critical thinking skills to help enrich us all.

History of the Space Shuttle: USA vs. Russia

January 16 | 10 – 11:30am | Thursday
Bentley Village

Speaker: Edward Grace

From the beginning, the Space Shuttle program was a bold idea. It was a space-
plane launched as a rocket, unpowered, with one chance to glide safely back to
earth. After thirty years of service, the shuttles have come back to earth for good
and found new homes in museums across the U.S. This lecture revisits the highs
and lows of the Space Shuttle Program. We also explore the Russian Space Shut-
tle Buran and why it wasn’t a success. Finally, we investigate the latest develop-
ments in aircraft and ponder whether pilots be replaced by computers. Our speak-
er was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work on the Apollo 13
mission which safely returned three astronauts to earth after an explosion occurr-
ed in their Service Module 200,000 miles from earth on its way to the moon.
