Edison Ford members: $75; non-members: $80 Digital Discussion Digital Discussion: The Minnesota Twins Spring Training History January 21, 10:30 a.m. We will outline all that Minnesota Twins did to keep up the Spring Training momentum in Southwest Florida! In February 1925, his- tory was changed in Fort Myers with the arrival of the Philadelphia Athletics and their manager, Connie Mack. This began a history of spring training in Fort Myers that continues to this day. When the Minnesota Twins began spring training in 1991, they had a ballpark built for them known as Hammond Stadium. Gardening Classes Introduction to Florida Gardening – Part I January 21, 1:30 p.m. Trying to sort out topsy turvy growing cycles? We will de-mystify the nuances of our soils, climate, and sub-tropical pests within the context of an extensive introduction to sub-tropical plants, shrubs and trees. Inclusive of an introduction to palms, this class includes a tour and continued discussion in the Estates’ Palmetum. Edison Ford members: $45; non-members: $60 Introduction to Florida Gardening – Part II January 25, 10 a.m. Part II begins with the principles of Florida Friendly Gardening, gardening for butterflies, proper use of fertilizers, irrigation tips, weed and invasive plant recognition, and plant selection for the South Florida landscape. This class includes a tour and continu- ed discussions in our butterfly, Florida native, Moonlight and cycad gardens. The class is held in the air-conditioned Fort Myers-Lee County Garden Council building (enter across from the Estates parking lot on Larchmont Avenue). Edison Ford members: $45; non-members: $60 Upcoming Events Rhythm on the River: Liz “Hunny” Heath and her Five-Piece Jazz Band January 31, 6:30 p.m. Listen to jazz and dance the night away with Liz “Hunny” Heath and her five-piece jazz band! Liz has been singing professionally all across Florida since 2018 and has performed in the FSW and FGCU jazz bands. Guests should bring a folding chair and a jac- ket as this is an outdoor event. Tickets: $30 for members or $35 for non-members. A VIP seating area may be reserved by the table for $275 (for up to five people); table ticket price includes the use of a table and chairs. Annual Antique Car Show February 1, 10 a.m. Registration deadline is January 27 Each year, classic car owners exhibit their cars on the Ford estate lawn as a tribute to Henry Ford, the pioneer of the automobile in- dustry. Along with the car show, there will be music and food trucks and visitors can tour the site. The event is free for members and $25 for non-members, which includes a self-guided tour. For antique car owners wanting to participate, registration will be accepted for Ford models 1980 and older. The fee is $30 per car and $15 for an additional car. Click here to register your car. Spring Garden Festival February 8 and 9, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Get ready for one of the most incredible local gardening events. Admission starts at 9 a.m. for BOTH members and non-mem- bers. Close to 100 garden vendors will have many types of plants and trees, including palms, fruit trees, bromeliads, hibiscus, butter- fly plants, African violets, orchids, air plants, herbs, succulents, cacti and many hard-to-find species. The festival will also feature food trucks and live music. The Garden Shoppe will be open and have unusual tropical and Florida native plants that thrive in South- west Florida. A limited number of carts will be available, so guests are encouraged to bring a cart or wagon for transporting plants. Parking and admission to the festival is free (tours and admission to the riverside, museum or lab are not included). Adult Programs Botanical Abstract Mono Prints Class January 26, 9 a.m. Artist Marie Dyer will teach you the basics of effective mono printing. You will use acrylic paints, plants, household items, and construction materials when experimenting and designing your art on paper. All materials will be provided. Advance registration is required. Exhibits New Exhibit: The Lure of Florida Fishing Opens January 19 in the Edison Caretaker’s House The excitement of hooking a fish on the line and reeling it in lures people to Florida, especially Southwest Florida! This draw to fishing goes all the way back to the days of Edison, and this will be featured in our new “Lure of Florida Fishing” exhibit in partnership with the Museum of Florida History. Two of the Edison family’s recrea- tional activities were boating and fishing – and they enjoyed both on and along the Caloosahatchee River and throughout Southwest Florida. The exhibit will be on display in the Edison Caretaker’s House through May 18. Included with admission. This program is held in the 15,000-square-foot museum. Included with admission. Yoga Mondays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m. Class will be held in the River Pavilion (weather permitting). Pose in front of one of the antique Ford cars, or find a cool backdrop in the wilderness vibe of exploration in our “Into the Wild” Exhi- bit. You can also get a picture of your experience with the first device that recorded sound in the Music and Movies Gallery, or the “Friends, Family, and Fun: Edison and Ford in the Florida Sun exhibit” has a neat display of the interior of Edison’s main home. Lastly, we have wooden carved stations in our Baseball exhibit for a picture on the sportier side. Come see us and have some fun taking photos! The museum is included with admission.
