City of Fort Myers launches new domain name – fortmyers.gov

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Jan. 27, 2025) – The City of Fort Myers is thrilled to announce the launch of fortmyers.gov, a new domain name vetted and approved by the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to ensure the City’s website is recognized as an authoritative and secure source for public information. The new website address is part of a long-term effort to strengthen the City’s brand identity, increase security and counter disinformation.
The previous domain name, cityftmyers.com, will redirect users to fortmyers.gov for six months. The fmpolice.com and fortmyersfire.com website addresses will remain the same.
“Switching to a .gov domain reassures residents that the information on our website is official and trustworthy,” said Richard Calkins, Director of Information Technology Services for the City of Fort Myers. “This transition marks a significant milestone for the City, reinforcing our commitment to innovation, transparency and community engagement.”
Registering for a .gov domain through CISA required the City to submit evidence it was applying on behalf of a legitimate local government. The new .gov domain makes it more difficult for malicious actors and scammers to co-opt the City website. Using less secure domains such as .com allows cybercriminals to more easily impersonate government entities.
As part of the launch, all City employee emails, including police and fire personnel, have transitioned to the fortmyers.gov domain name. Residents should not experience impacts from the .gov transition but are encouraged to update any website bookmarks and contact lists.
