Note to Media: Civil rights pioneer and Olympic gold medalist Tommie Smith will be the keynote speaker for the 2019 Rotary of Fort Myers South Scholar-Athlete Awards. Smith and track teammate John Carlos made history in 1968 when they raised their fists in protest on the medal stand at the 1968 Summer Olympics.
 
Thirty-six male and female athletes from Lee County high schools will be honored during the awards presentation for their school and community activities as well as their leadership. The recipients of two $5,000 scholarships will also be announced.

WHEN: Wednesday, May 15, 7-9 p.m.; Interviews with scholar-athletes and Tommie Smith will be available from 4:45-5:45 p.m.
