NAPLES, Fl. (May 8, 2018) –Cayla Childs has been promoted to managing editor of Gulfshore Life. She has been with the publication full-time since early 2013, when she joined as associate editor. She was promoted to senior editor in 2015.
 
Childs’ duties include managing the flow of all editorial copy from writer to printer, coordinating special projects and packages, overseeing freelance contributors and editorial interns, collaborating with other departments, writing regularly and serving as primary copy editor companywide. She also serves as managing editor of Naples Health, a custom quarterly publication for NCH Healthcare System; the Southwest Florida Guide to the Arts, an annual publication presented by Gulfshore Life and Sarasota Magazine; and the Gulfshore Life Social Register, an annual compilation of more than 300 nonprofit listings and their fundraising events.
 
A Naples native, Childs graduated from the University of Florida with bachelor’s degrees in journalism and anthropology and has freelanced for multiple industry outlets. Her first experience with the Gulfshore family of publications was in 2011, when she spent the summer as an editorial intern.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 9, 2018) – The Greater Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce invites the community to join in an insightful discussion on education and the Chamber’s Education Foundation during its May General Membership Meeting on Thursday, May 17. The event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at Pelican Preserve, 9802 Pelican Preserve Blvd. in Fort Myers.
The event will feature informative panel discussions with Foundation board and committee members on the Foundation and its role within the community. The first panel will feature an overview of the Foundation and its educational, grants and scholarship programs, and will be followed by a second panel focused on the future of the Foundation.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 9, 2018) – Summer reading days will return to Bennett’s Fresh Roast for the 11^th year this summer and continue to encourage Southwest Florida children to read while out of school.
. “Reading is a great summer activity because it takes kids on different adventures and opens up their imaginations,” said Bennett’s owner Bob Grissinger. “And it reminds children and parents that learning shouldn’t stop when summer begins.”
Beginning Friday, June 1 through Wednesday, August 9, Bennett’s will offer school-aged children, from kindergarten through fifth grade, a complimentary fresh donut each time they read a book at Bennett’s in downtown Fort Myers. Children may receive one free donut per day when they read a book and are accompanied by a parent until 3 p.m. while daily supplies last.
“If we can have a small part in helping parents encourage their kids to read, we’re happy to do it. Our comfortable seating areas are the perfect spot for kids to curl up with a good book, and when the summer weather cooperates, our outside patio areas are very relaxing, too. We love to hear children’s laughter in our shops,” added Grissinger. “We’ve had such great response from all the kids and families who have participated in our summer reading over the years and we anxiously await summer to begin to bring this program back each year.”
A selection of books appropriate for children are available for reading on site.
Bennett’s Fresh Roast has also prided itself on its fresh-from-scratch donuts made daily and being the only Fort Myers donut shop to serve fresh roasted coffee from the finest beans, resulting in the most flavorful and freshest cup of coffee around.

The show’s second romantic storyline involves Nathan Detroit, the consummate gambling man and the operator of “The World’s Largest Floating Crap Game”, and Miss Adelaide, the main attraction at the Hot Box nightclub, who have been engaged for fourteen years. Second Chances: The Thrift Shop Musical (April 4 – May 12, 2019)

Little Shop of Horrors (May 16 – June 15, 2019)
One of the longest running Off-Broadway shows is a deviously delicious Broadway and Hollywood sci-fi, smash-hit musical that has devoured the hearts of theatre goers for decades! Meek floral assistant Seymour stumbles across a new breed of plant that he names “Audrey II” – after his coworker (and crush!).  This sassy, R&B-singing plant promises everlasting fame and fortune, as long as Seymour keeps feeding it its special diet. Between bites, Audrey II brings down the house with music composed by Alan Menken in the style 1960s rock and roll, doo-wop and Motown including the well-known Suddenly, Seymour.
 
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (June 20 – August 10, 2019)
“Be Our Guest” as we step into the enchanted world of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast! The classic “tale as old as time” tells of Belle, a young woman in a small town, and a Beast, who is really a young prince under a spell. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed into his former self. Time is running out and if the Beast doesn’t learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed forever. The Marvelous Wonderettes are the entertainers at Harper’s Hardware Holiday Party and like every year, Mr. Harper is scheduled to pass out the employee bonuses. When Mr. Harper doesn’t show, one of the girls goes to find him, but instead finds what she thinks are the bonuses, but they’re not and everyone is in for a big surprise! Mrs. Stancliffe’s Rose Cottage Bed & Breakfast has been successful for many years. Her guests, most of which are women, return year after year. Next-door neighbor, “Bud the Stud” thinks they come to spend time with him in romantic liaisons. The fun begins as three women arrive and turn the table on Bud and Mrs. Stancliffe’s suitor, Henry, in a hysterical attempt to show the men who is the smarter sex.
 
Broadway Palm Children’s Theatre shows are fun for everyone!  The chef’s buffet includes children’s favorites such as pizza, chicken nuggets, pasta, french fries and more.  Tickets are just $19 for all ages. WHAT:                       On Friday, May 18, Senior Helpers of Fort Myers is hosting a senior health fair in collaboration with FYZICAL® Fitness and Millennium Physicians Group. FYZICAL® Fitness Fort Myers offers The Rock Steady Boxing program, a proven success in alleviating the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Angela Moran, Head Coach of Rock Steady Boxing at FYZICAL® Fitness, will showcase the program’s PD4 class, which is geared towards those who are no longer able to walk. The facility features a unique state-of-the-art Railz system to prevent falls while increasing strength and building confidence. Millennium Physicians Group, a local comprehensive primary care practice, will provide case managers to share information on maintaining relationships with doctors, upholding healthy diets, organizing medications as well as offer blood pressure checks for attendees.
 
Falls are very prevalent in the elderly population and account for multiple hospital visits and deaths each year. According to the National Council for Aging Care, there are over 800,000 hospitalizations and more than 37,000 deaths caused by falls each year. Dr. Virginia Reed and Dr. Grace Berry will speak to how FYZICAL® Therapy & Balance Centers help those living with Parkinson’s, and will also discuss the relationship between physical therapy and audiology in treating balance disorders.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 8, 2018) – The Academy of Lifelong Learning at Shell Point Retirement Community invites the public to attend May classes that will discuss the environment, politics and history.
At 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 17, Kristie Anders, education director at the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, will present “Tides and Currents” in the Grand Cypress Room at The Woodlands at Shell Point, 14441 Woodsong Lane in Fort Myers. This presentation will explore waves, tides and currents of the sea. During the lecture, Anders will explain not only what influences the tides, but also how they affect Southwest Florida residents. A short film by the Captiva Island Historical Society, entitled “Santiva,” will also be shown.
The Academy of Lifelong Learning will also welcome Lee County Supervisor of Elections Tommy Doyle for a free presentation at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, May 19 in the Social Center on The Island at Shell Point, 15101 Shell Point Blvd. in Fort Myers. During his class, entitled “Lee County Supervisor of Elections Preparing for Mid-Term Elections,” Doyle will focus on politics and upcoming elections. As a lifelong resident of Lee County, Doyle has a deep-rooted passion for the county’s history and traditions. His fundamental belief in a representative form of government led him to run for office, and he was elected Supervisor of Elections in 2016.
The final class offered in May is “The Viking Age,” hosted by Florida SouthWestern State College Professor Adrian Kerr at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22, in the Grand Cypress Room at The Woodlands at Shell Point, 14441 Woodsong Lane in Fort Myers. During his compelling presentation on the Vikings, Kerr will explain how the Norse invaders spread out and colonized Dublin, York, Normandy, Greenland and even parts of Russia and the Mediterranean during the Germanic Iron Age. Kerr will uncover what led the Vikings to flee their homeland and set off on many dangerous expeditions, and also examine the rich influence these Norseman left on the world today.

The Academy of Lifelong Learning at Shell Point is an educational initiative that provides approximately 80 classes each semester, and encompasses a well-rounded curriculum of educational opportunities for senior adults, from computer technology to financial, travel, artistic, entertainment, historical, and more. The Academy of Lifelong Learning at Shell Point was named as one of 2008’s most innovative active aging programs by the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA), an association that supports professionals who develop wellness/fitness facilities and services for age 50-plus adults.
