Lee Health Foundation honors Dr. Steve Machiz with Humanitarian Award at its Evening of Gratitude event

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Dec. 9, 2019) – Lee Health Foundation has awarded the Frank Haskell Humanitarian Award to Dr. Steve Machiz for his incredible leadership in establishing SWFL Children’s Charities, Inc., a nonprofit most known for its annual Southwest Florida Wine & Food Fest.

Machiz established the nonprofit in 2008, and one year later, SWFL Children’s Charities, Inc. pledged $10 million to build a new children’s hospital in Southwest Florida. By 2012, they were ranked by Wine Spectator as the third most successful wine festival in the country. Since its inception, it has generously donated more than $19 million to Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, making it the second largest donor behind the hospital’s namesake, Tom Golisano.

“I was honored to be in a position to bring the Southwest Florida Wine & Food Fest to life with the support of so many caring and generous people,” shared Dr. Steve Machiz. “By being strategic and thinking big, we have proven that when we work together for the community good, we can accomplish anything. There is no greater joy than to see the Children’s Hospital standing tall and proud on the campus of HealthPark.”

Prior to Machiz’ acceptance at the event, a new pledge of $3 million to create SWFL Children’s Charities Eye Institute of Golisano Children’s Hospital was announced, which will make SWFL Children’s Charities, Inc. the largest donor to Golisano Children’s Hospital.

The Frank Haskell Humanitarian Award recognizes outstanding leadership in the advancement of quality health care for the citizens of Southwest Florida. The award is named in honor of Frank Haskell, co-founder, with his late wife Betty, of Barbara’s Friends – Golisano Children’s Hospital Cancer Fund, which was named in memory of their daughter Barbara after cancer claimed her life when she was far too young. For more than 25 years, Frank has worked tirelessly to help local children win their battles with cancer and life-threatening blood disorders. At age 90 he is not done yet, raising more than $20 million to date and counting. Previous recipients of the award have included Al Kinkle, Joe Catti, Jim Nathan and Amanda Cross.

The prestigious award was presented at Lee Health Foundation’s annual Evening of Gratitude, held Nov. 20 at The Forest Country Club. The formal event thanked more than 350 donors and supporters in attendance for their generosity and unwavering commitment to enhancing health care services within the Lee Health network. Also in attendance to address the audience was Kelli Parlavecchio, a patient of Lee Health’s Regional Cancer Center and beneficiary of the Sharon MacDonald Breast Health Fund. Sharon MacDonald was present at the event who shared an embracing moment after Parlavecchio shared her story of gratitude. Fifteen-year-old Summer Kates, who was hit by a car in 2015, also shared her story of gratitude. Kates now runs her own nonprofit, Summer’s Cookies, to benefit the Child Life program at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida.

Cape Coral office to present check during Dec. 7 event
FORT MYERS, Fla. (Dec. 5, 2019) – A special Dec. 7 event will highlight a project from the heart by the Cape Coral office of the Lee County Tax Collector supporting veterans in need of housing assistance through the Hearts and Homes for Veterans Inc. organization.
The Cape Coral office will co-host the event, starting at 1 p.m., at the Southwest Florida Military Museum & Library in Cape Coral and present a substantial monetary gift to Hearts and Homes. The event will honor Pearl Harbor Day. The museum is located at 4820 Leonard St. in downtown Cape Coral.
Chief Deputy Tax Collector Noelle Branning also will be in attendance for the ceremony.
“Our Cape Coral office and the community really opened their hearts to help veterans seeking assistance,” Branning said. “The generosity to those who have given so much for us is touching and heartwarming.”
The inspiring teamwork of the Cape Coral office to raise the money started Jan. 1. Each of the 23 clerks in the office were asked to contribute at least $5 each day until they reached their money goal, and they sold candy bars to customers. Providing extra motivation was an idea by clerk Robin Halek. She purchased a trophy and whomever gave the most money each day earned the right to display the trophy, which had a clever name.
“She called it the candy crusher,” Cape Coral customer service manager Chrissy Means said.
This was the second year the Cape office has opened their hearts to continue a program created last year by then Cape Coral Customer Service Manager Lorena Velasquez, who is a military veteran.
Means said they are excited about the check presentation ceremony. “It’s a big day. Patrick in our office is a veteran and we have two other clerks from the office who have family members who are veterans. We also have veterans coming from Lehigh for the check presentation.”
Hearts and Homes is a non-profit corporation, based in Fort Myers, which provides subsidized housing to low- and middle-income veterans. The organization also provides food and job support for veterans seeking employment, as well as assisting them in applying for benefits.

Cypress Pharmacy to host Seminar Saturday Dec. 14 on natural immune system boosters for flu season

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Dec. 3, 2019) – Cypress Pharmacy will host its monthly Seminar Saturday Dec. 14 with a discussion by Natural Health Consultant Dr. Stan Headley on “Boosting Your Immune System Against the Flu with CBD.” Seating at the popular free public seminars is limited, and available seats fill up quickly.

The seminar will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. at Cypress Pharmacy, 9451 Cypress Lake Drive in Fort Myers. Headley’s program will highlight the role of the immune system and how to prepare the body for flu season through natural immune boosters, including CBD.

“Flu season is at its peak between December and February, so now is the time to prepare in order to protect your body from illness,” said Dr. Headley, who specializes in functional and natural wellness, and leads the independent pharmacy’s dynamic wellness program. “In addition to getting a flu shot, you can also give your immune system a natural boost to help fight viruses and harmful bacteria. We’ll talk about CBD and other natural immunity-boosting strategies to get you ready for flu season.”

Attendees interested in getting their flu shot following the seminar can schedule an appointment by calling 239-481-7322. Those who get the flu shot will receive a free 30-minute one-on-one wellness consultation with Dr. Headley. The pharmacy is also offering an Immunity Booster Bundle for $50, which includes professional-grade vitamin C, probiotic and zinc to help the immune system work effectively. While many insurance providers will cover the cost of the flu vaccine, the standard influenza vaccine is $40 per person for those who do not have insurance or whose insurance does not cover the vaccination. Participants must bring their insurance card, if applicable.

As Cypress Pharmacy’s natural health consultant, Headley offers nutritional and lifestyle counseling, supplement recommendations, lab testing and educational seminars, emphasizing options for those with chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Cypress Pharmacy’s wellness program offers one-on-one consultations with Headley on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, or with a pharmacist on Mondays through Saturdays. Recommendations can include pharmaceutical-grade supplements in addition to dietary and lifestyle changes. Pharmacists may also examine current medications to assure the most effective therapy for the patient’s needs and to prevent duplicate therapies.

Headley is recognized as a leading authority in functional and natural wellness, which seeks to determine how and why diseases, illnesses and pain are occurring. He attempts to identify the root cause of a health concern rather than just treating symptoms. Headley does not diagnose or treat disease but educates customers about lifestyle and behavioral changes that can promote optimal health.

Cypress Pharmacy’s monthly Seminar Saturday sessions take place on the second Saturday of every month, providing education on a variety of wellness topics. To RSVP for the Dec. 14 Seminar Saturday, or to learn more about Cypress Pharmacy’s wellness program, please visit CypressPharmacy.com/events or call 239-481-7322.

Snook harvest seasonal closure in Atlantic starts Dec. 15

The recreational harvest season for snook closes Dec. 15 in Atlantic state and federal waters, including Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee River, and will remain closed through Jan. 31, 2020, reopening to harvest Feb. 1. Anglers may continue to catch and release snook during the closed season.
Most state and all federal waters in the Gulf, including Monroe County and Everglades National Park, closed Dec. 1 and will reopen to harvest March 1, 2020.
Seasonal closures are designed to help protect snook during vulnerable times, such as cold weather.
Snook remains catch-and-release only in state waters from the Hernando/Pasco county line through Gordon Pass in Collier County (includes Tampa Bay and Hillsborough County) through May 31, 2020, in response to the impacts of red tide. Snook also has a regular season closure that runs May 1 through Aug. 31. At its February meeting, FWC anticipates discussing whether to reopen snook harvest in this area on March 1. Comment on this and other red-tide-related issues at MyFWC.com/SaltwaterComments.
For more information on snook, visit MyFWC.com/Marine and click on “Recreational Regulations” and “Snook.” Improve data and report your catch on the Angler Action Foundation iAngler app at AnglerActionFoundation.com.

ARCHway Newsletter

ARCHway Institute
The Holiday Season Can Drive Higher Relapse Rates

This newsletter is going out to ARCHway’s National Following and to the ARCHway Board and Staff.

During the month of December ARCHway is running our Annual Holiday HOPE Campaign to Reduce Holiday Relapse. Our goals during the month are:

·         Provide educational material to families and individuals dealing with this disease on how they can have a plan to reduce stress during the Holidays and other measures to reduce risk of relapse. Our goal is to get this information to our followers so they can pass it along to friends and family knowing that 1 in 3 families in the US is dealing with this disease.

ARCHway is looking to raise a total of $20,000 in December to be used as Scholarships during the Holiday months as well as throughout 2020. We have two families who will match the first $10,000 raised so we are looking to raise $10,000 during the month. This $20,000 will provide around 40 scholarships.

·         ARCHway’s official media campaign will be December 11th thru December 18th but we are kicking off all the work right now before Thanksgiving to get the educational material in people’s hands as well as try to have over 50% of our goal raised before the blitz. In addition, the ARCHway Board has already approved releasing $5,000 in Grants as Scholarships in $500 Grants to ten different facilities ahead of this campaign. You can make a donation now to the Holiday HOPE Campaign.

Marci Smith – Avoiding Relapse During The Holidays

Listen to Peer Support Specialist Marci Smith talk about why the Holidays can be so stressful with a high risk of relapse. Marci then goes on to talk about having a prevention plan in place during the Holidays to avoid relapse. Her key prevention messages during a Holiday Event are:

·         Make sure you have an exit plan from any Holiday Event in case you start feeling uncomfortable.

·         Have a recovery support person go to the event with you.

·         Her final message is that if you feel very uncomfortable about going, just decide not to attend the event.

Marci Smith Sponsorship of the ARCHway HOPE Fund

In September Marci Smith created her ARCHway HOPE Fund Sponsorship. Her Sponsorship is currently at the Silver level. The HOPE Fund Sponsorships are the main vehicle that have allowed ARCHway to release over $250,000 in Scholarships and Educational Grants. You can learn more about Marci Smith by going to her Sponsorship Page.   Contact Jan Stuckey at [email protected] if you are interested in creating your own ARCHway HOPE Fund Sponsorship.

How can you help starting right now:

Share educational material about Reducing Risk of Holiday Relapse with friends and family through Facebook, email or printed copy. Just showing your friends you understand the issues with this disease may be all it takes for them to seek help. See detailed information below.

·         If you shop on Amazon during the Holidays, please start using Amazon Smile and consider designating ARCHway Institute for Mental Health and Addictive Disorders (legal name) as your charity of choice. All donations by Amazon to ARCHway during the Holidays will be matched by our two generous families.

  •  Consider running a personal Facebook Fundraiser designating ARCHway. You can use some of the educational tools we are providing below. A great target might be to raise $100 to $500 since $500 is what a typical ARCHway Scholarship runs. It can be a great family giving opportunity and ARCHway will recognize your family on one of our Scholarship Grants. If you have questions on how to do this, please contact Dan at [email protected]. You can create your Personal Fundraiser right now by going to the following link.

·         Consider making a personal contribution to the Holiday Campaign knowing your donation will be going to help someone on their journey of recovering their life.

The ARCHway Team cannot thank you enough for your on-going support in helping bring HOPE and knowing people can and do get better if they have the proper support systems around them. This disease currently does not have a cure but it can be managed effectively if the support is available.
