Natalie Brouwer returns with an all-new musical, PURE GOLD, featuring songs from the golden age of Broadway.  Co-stars are piano maestro Brian Burl and Matt Michael.  Songs from Oklahoma, Anything Goes, Baes in Arms, South Pacific and others are included in the performances at the Players Circle Theatre June 18-20.
The Friday, June 18, performance begins at 8:00 p.m.; Saturday, 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, 2:00 pm. Tickets are $25 general admission, and $35 VIP.

The Players Circle Theatre is located at the Shell Factory and Nature Park, 16554 North Cleveland Ave., North Fort Myers.  The theatre has been converted into a nightclub/cabaret style facility, which has limited, spaced seating, temperature checks, and thorough sanitizing; masks are worn by all audience members until seated.  The theatre is in compliance with all CDC guidelines.

The Laboratory Theater of Florida Announces 13th Season
FORT MYERS, FL (June 2nd, 2021) – As pandemic restrictions ease, The Laboratory Theater of Florida is excited to announce its 13th season.

In the style of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane: A Parody of the Horror and Hush Up Sweet Charlotte, this snarky take on the film noir classic, Sunset Boulevard, has all the fun and camp that audiences know and love from a June production at The Lab.
Adapted and directed by Annette Trossbach and workshopped by this tight-knit ensemble cast and crew, Sunset Schmoulevard is truly a Lab Theater original. This show features Sue Schaffel, Steven Coe, Greg Wojciechowski, Brian Linthicum, Daniel Sabiston, and Madelaine Weymouth.

“Failure: A Love Story” by Philip Dawkins (SWFL premiere) is a limited engagement offering from July 29th through August 8th only as part of the theater’s education program.
By the end of 1928, all three Fail sisters will be dead — expiring in reverse order, youngest to oldest, from a blunt object to the head, disappearance, and finally consumption. Tuneful songs and a whimsical chorus follow the story of Nelly, Jenny June, and Gerty as they live out their lives above the family clock repair shop near the Chicago River before their time unexpectedly runs out. A magical, musical fable where, in the end, the power of love is far greater than any individual’s successes or failures.

Grill Fires Can Turn Dinner into Disaster

Local SERVPRO fire and water clean-up professional offers safety tips to help outdoor chefs prevent fires and burn injuries

Fort Myers, FL (Grassroots Newswire) June 3, 2021 – As the summer season approaches, local fire and disaster remediation specialist John Ferguson of SERVPRO^® of Bonita Springs/Estero knows that the number of grill fires will increase, peaking in July. “Charcoal and gas grills, barbeques and the like are involved in an average of more than 5,000 structure fires each year and almost 5,000 additional outdoor fires,” said Ferguson. Beyond that, Ferguson adds, grilling accidents result in 19,700 trips to the hospital annually. Thermal burns account for 9,500 of those visits, and children under the age of five account for an average of 2,000, or 39 percent, of those burns.¹
Ferguson knows that families can take steps to protect their home from damage and their family from injuries and still enjoy home-grilled, summer meals.
Before you grill:¹

• READY: Clean grill racks and grease trays. For gas grills, check the gas tank hose for leaks at the beginning of the season.
• SET: Choose a safe, firm, level spot for the grill away from coolers, running children and pets, and mingling guests. Grill outside, never in a garage or under the awning on a deck, the eaves of your home, or low-hanging branches.
• GO: Prepare the grill for cooking carefully. For charcoal grills, use a charcoal chimney with newspaper, a charcoal starter fluid, or an electric charcoal starter plugged into an outdoor-rated extension cord. For gas grills, open the lid before turning the grill on. If you smell gas after the grill is lit, do not try to move the grill. Get away from the grill and call the fire department.

While you grill: ²

• SAFE ZONE: Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the hot grill, both while you are cooking and after you serve the food. Grill surfaces can remain hot for an hour or more.
• SAFE TOOLS: Use long-handled grill utensils in good condition; avoid loose, flowing clothing; and wear flame-retardant mitts to adjust vents to help prevent burns.
• SAFE COOKING: Keep the fire under control. Manage flareups by adjusting grill height, using grill controls, or spreading out the coal bed. Keep baking soda within reach to control grease fires. Watch for blowing embers and have a fire extinguisher, a garden hose, or a bucket of sand handy to extinguish spark-triggered fires. Never attempt to move a hot grill.

“Home fires can be devasting, both financially and emotionally, because smoke and water damage often amplify the destruction to both the structure and its contents,” says Ferguson. “While our SERVPRO-trained professionals are here to help you recover ‘Like it never even happened’ if you do experience a structure fire, we believe that prevention is better than a cure. Fires and burn injuries caused by grills are not strictly a summer phenomenon. The FWC offers spring/summer wild hog hunting at 26 wildlife management areas across the state.
Don’t quit hunting just because it’s summer – try wild hog hunting instead
Now is also a great time to visit an FWC- managed shooting range
If you’re looking for a hunting opportunity this time of year, you might want to consider wild hog hunting. During spring and summer, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) offers public hunting opportunities for wild hog at 26 wildlife management areas across the state. Wild hog hunting is a good way to sharpen your hunting skills, test new equipment and scout a WMA you might later want to hunt. It’s also a chance to restock your freezer with delicious wild game meat for all those summer cookouts.
You don’t need a hunting license to hunt wild hogs at a WMA, though you will need a management area permit, unless exempt. Many of these spring and summer wild hog hunts on WMAs don’t require a quota permit; however, some of them do. Take a moment to review the WMA regulations brochure for the area you want to hunt. These brochures also outline allowed methods of take, bag limits and other pertinent rules. You can find a list of WMAs (with links to individual brochures) that offer spring/summer wild hog hunting by visiting MyFWC.com/Hunting and clicking on the “Spring/summer wild hog hunting” banner at the top.
On lands outside the WMA system, wild hogs may be hunted year-round with landowner permission. A hunting license is not required, and there is no size or bag limit, and either sex may be harvested. Hunters may use dogs and any legal rifle, shotgun, crossbow, bow, pistol or air gun (including airbow).

FWC-managed shooting ranges
Practicing your marksmanship at an FWC-managed shooting range is another way to get ready for upcoming hunting seasons. To meet the needs of recreational target shooters, hunters and hunter safety students, the FWC manages public shooting ranges throughout the state. Several of the FWC-managed facilities are supervised by range safety officers, while Apalachicola, Ocala and Osceola national forests provide unstaffed facilities. Each range offers a different menu of opportunities that includes archery, rifle, handgun, sporting clays, trap, skeet and 5-stand. Phase I application period for fall quota/limited entry hunts
Don’t forget to apply for opportunities to hunt deer or wild hog this fall at a Florida wildlife management area or national wildlife refuge. The phase I application period for fall quota hunts, special-opportunity fall hunts and national wildlife refuge fall and winter hunts closes June 15 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Worksheets and permit details are at MyFWC.com/License, under “Limited Entry/Quota Hunts.” You can apply for these limited entry permits at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com or in person at a license agent or tax collector’s office. Report wild turkey sightings
We invite you to take part in FWC biologists’ efforts to learn more about Florida’s wild turkey populations by reporting all wild turkeys you see during your normal daily activities from June 1 to Aug. 31.
We’re interested in sightings of hens with and without poults, and jakes and gobblers from all regions of the state, including rural and developed areas. When reporting numbers of poults, be sure to look carefully because young birds may be difficult to see in tall grass or brush.
The Sunshine State is home to healthy wild turkey populations. They occur throughout Florida and prefer open forests, and forest edges and openings. Our biologists conduct this survey each year to learn more about annual nesting success, brood survival, and the distribution and abundance of wild turkeys.

Community Cooperative announces CEO transition
Galloway to step down; Edwards to succeed
 FORT MYERS, Fla. (June 1, 2021) – The board of directors of Community Cooperative has appointed Stefanie Ink Edwards as chief executive officer, effective June 14. Edwards succeeds Tracey Galloway, who has announced her retirement after 10 years with the organization.
“Leading and transforming Community Cooperative into the dynamic human services organization we are today has been one of the greatest honors of my life, and I am thrilled to pass the baton to Stefanie who has been an amazing leader in our organization for the past six years,” Galloway said. “I’m proud of the organization we’ve built, humbled by the amazing people I’ve had the pleasure of working with and pleased that our achievements will continue to make our community a better place to live for years to come.”
Community Cooperative’s board chairman Keith Banasiak said Galloway has accomplished a great deal in 10 years. “She articulated a vision for the organization and centered our mission, while greatly improving fundraising capabilities and building our volunteer base and service footprint across the county,” he said. “She gave Community Cooperative a strong voice full of creativity and passion.”

Edwards joined Community Cooperative in 2014 as development director. More recently she has served as COO and together with Galloway, helped to rebrand, reenergize and reposition Community Cooperative as a leading nonprofit in Lee County working to end hunger and homelessness.

FORT MYERS, FL, June 1, 2021 – At the start of the pandemic last year, Midwest Food Bank Florida made a commitment to the community and remained open. To do that, MFB had to adjust its volunteer model. Fewer people were allowed in volunteer groups to accommodate the need for social distancing. At the same time, the need for emergency food assistance rose sharply.
Now that Covid restrictions are loosening, people are comfortable with returning to volunteerism. MFB Florida welcomes people back and eagerly anticipates an increase in the number of volunteers.
