Message From Our Interim Executive Director:
Florida Rural Legal Services (FRLS) has great news to share: we recently received $260,360 from a class action settlement in Florida as part of a “Cy Pres” award.
Quick background…This type of award occurs when a class action lawsuit is settled but not all of the money is claimed by class members. And so, the extra money is put to good use — such as going to FRLS and other nonprofit legal providers.
In this specific case, the settlement, which was handled by Jeffrey M. Liggio, Esq. of Liggio Law in West Palm Beach, was the result of a 12 years of litigation on behalf behalf of a class of more than 65,000 Floridians against Heritage Propane (now Amerigas).
The settlement distribution was completed but significant funds remained, prompting the presiding Judge, the Honorable Pamela Campbell, in St. Petersburg, to order the remaining funds to be distributed to Cy Pres award recipients like FRLS.
The Cy Pres award will help us expand our critical legal services to stabilize families and close the justice gap for those in dire need in the 13 counties that we serve in South Central Florida. We will now be able to protect more elderly, children, the working poor, domestic violence victims, and other vulnerable and fragile populations.
We are very grateful to Mr. Liggio for including FRLS to the settlement distribution. With these funds, we will continue working for people in our community with nowhere else to turn.
Best Regards,
Grissim Walker
