A MESSAGE FROM DAVID AND ANJALI As we begin the month of April and celebrate the kickoff of Autism Acceptance Month, it’s a wonderful time to reflect on the successes we’ve achieved, and push set a course forward to achieve greater inclusion across our region. According to the U.S. Department of Education the percent of special education students who spend most of their time in regular education classes is now 66.5 percent, up from 31.7 percent in 1989. In the U.S. overall, 14.7 percent of all students were special education students (ages 3-21) in 2021-22. Much of this progress isn’t just the expansion of these opportunities national, but also right here in Southwest Florida. Family Initiative in partnership with the Lee County Tax Collectors Office has launched an employment program for young adults on the autism spectrum. This wonderful collaboration offers young adults the opportunity to gain professional experience and skills, while serving as shining examples to their colleagues about the game changing potential they bring to the work- place. With community leaders like Lee County Tax Collector Noelle Branning, who are always searching for every opportunity to strengthening her team, while championing inclusion for all we as a community are a better place. In partnership with our state leaders, the Florida Agency for Persons with Disabilities, community stakeholders and our amazing families we look forward to further expansion of inclusion and sup- ports for individuals on the autism spectrum. Thank you so much for your support of Family Initiative and the autism community. Celebrating a Milestone: Governor Ron DeSantis signs SB 1758 into Law! In a momentous event, Governor Ron DeSantis officially signed SB 1758 into law, marking a significant step forward for the APD Florida (Agency for Persons with Disabilities). This bill solidifies the incredible progress already being made through the First Lady Casey DeSantis’s Hope Florida Initiative. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to APD Director Taylor Hatch for their exceptional leadership and partnership, as well as to Representative Adam Botana and Senator Jonathan Martin for taking the time to connect with and support our families. Together, we are making a positive impact on the lives of individuals with disabilities. Join us for Autism Acceptance Family Fun Day! It began in Tarpon Bay on March 19, 1885, and Southwest Florida was changed forever. A mighty silver-sided tarpon was captured on a rod and reel for the first time on record. Southwest Florida became the epicenter of a new sport that generated interest around the globe. Celebrities and presidents were lured (no pun intended) to the area to catch the silver king. As a result, the area became a major tourist destination. Anglers still come in search of the silver king of gamefish beginning each April. This year, three tarpon tournaments (catch and release) will take place in May. Stevens Construction begins Shalimar Beach Resort
Stevens Construction has started construction of Shalimar Beach Resort located at 2823 W. Gulf Drive…
Stevens Construction has started construction of Shalimar Beach Resort located at 2823 W. Gulf Drive on Sanibel Island, announced Dan Adams, executive vice president/partner, Stevens Construction, Inc.
Kicking off construction with a groundbreaking ceremony on March 28, Shalimar Beach Resort, the first ground-up resort to begin construction after Hurricane Ian, will be a 52,207-square-foot resort with multiple buildings offering several accommodation options for resort guests. Established in 1959, Shalimar will include a 27,334-square-foot, two-story building with 21 hotel rooms, situated over parking. The resort will also include a 6,032-square-foot, two-story fourplex building with two, one-bedroom and two, two-bedroom, two-bathroom cottages over covered parking. Stevens Construction is also building four duplex buildings with one-bedroom cottages situated over covered parking and an office manager’s suite over parking that is adjacent to the office and resort lobby. All 33 units include fully equipped kitchens, tile flooring throughout and screened balcony with Gulf views. Slated for completion in fall 2025, Shalimar Beach Resort will also feature a pool, rooftop terrace, laundry facilities and a boardwalk to the Gulf of Mexico.
Forced to rebuild after Ian washed away their previous resort, Sean Niesel, Shalimar owner, reached out to Stevens Construction after its new beach resort was already designed, however, it was over their budget. Stevens Construction spent six months working with the client and the architect to identify ways to save money within the existing design and found $1.4 million in cost-savings in the plans and the project is now moving forward within the client’s budget.
The newly designed Shalimar Beach Resort features an enhanced structural design that provides additional resistance to inclement weather as all buildings are six feet above base flood elevation ensuring building resilience.
The Stevens Construction team includes Director of Preconstruction Nick Burkel, Estimating Engineer Evan Lopes, Project Manager Mike Brooks, Superintendent Tom Porter and Project Administrator Kelsey Pojofsky. Architecture Joyce Owens is the architect of record.

During the event, 33 individuals committed to a five-year donation pledge to become a Habitat for Humanity SuperPerson and five existing SuperPeople increased their pledge amounts, making it Habitat’s most successful pledge drive in Women Build history. Additionally, all pledges made during the event were matched dollar-for-dollar by SuperPerson Brian Lucas. The evening was further highlighted by an inspiring testimony from a Habitat homeowner and single mother, sharing the transformational impact of a safe and affordable home for her and her family.
Seventy-five percent of families partnering with Habitat for Humanity to build a home are female-headed households, underscoring the critical need for affordable housing among women in Lee and Hendry Counties. The organization aims to raise $450,000 during the 2024 Women Build season, which directly supports the construction of homes for local female-led families.
Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build is a national initiative to engage women in the effort to provide safe and decent homes for families in need of affordable housing. Since 2011, Women Build has partnered with 29 female-headed families in Lee and Hendry counties to build strength and stability for their children through local fundraising and volunteer efforts.

About Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties
Celebrating 40 years of service and the impact of home, Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties is proudly driven by its vision for a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Since 1982, Habitat has partnered with nearly 1,800 families to help them achieve their dream of affordable homeownership. In addition to putting in 300 hours of sweat equity into building their own homes, Habitat Homeowners also contribute to their closing costs, attend more than 20 hours of financial education classes, and pay an affordable mortgage set at no more than 30% of their monthly income. As a builder, developer, mortgage lender, housing counseling agency, and retail operator, Habitat works to bring people together to build homes, community, and hope. Through volunteering and providing financial or material donations, everyone can help Lee and Hendry County families achieve strength, stability, and independence.
