FWC and FDACS to conduct public meeting about chronic wasting disease Following confirmation
of Florida’s first known case of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in June 2023, The Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer
Services (FDACS) are hosting the following public meeting in Bonifay:

Thursday, April 11
6-8 p.m. (CDT)
Bonifay K-8 School Auditorium
140 Blue Devil Drive
Bonifay, FL 32425

This meeting will provide information about CWD, updates on the unified agency and partner
response, new hunting regulations for the area, and sampling and testing procedures. Attendees
will also be given an opportunity to ask questions about CWD and CWD management strategies.

The Florida Channel will live stream this meeting at TheFloridaChannel.org. Questions can be
asked in advance by emailing [email protected].

The FWC and its agency partners take CWD very seriously and have implemented a comprehensive
response plan. As part of the plan, the FWC and FDACS have been collecting samples from established
zones to further assess any spread of the disease. As of March 28, no additional positive cases have been
detected.

The FWC is asking anyone who sees a sick, abnormally thin deer or finds a deer dead from unknown
causes to call the CWD hotline, 866-CWD-WATCH (866-293-9282) and report the animal’s location.

For more information, visit MyFWC.com/CWD.

offers a fascinating and insightful look into the motivation of spies

The Creation of Germany
April 4 | 1:30 – 3 pm Wednesday
Naples Center / Online via Zoom

Perhaps because of its dominant role in two world wars, it is easy to think of
Germany as an old nation with a long history. But Germany is a young state,
less than 150 years old. The original territory was divided into myriad small
holdings ruled by independent noble families and surrounded by the power-
ful states of Austria and France. The path to unification would be blocked by
all of these. Despite earlier attempts, it took the rise of Otto von Bismarck,
with his cunning, wisdom and political acuity, to overcome all these obstacles
and establish the German Empire.

Iphone-ography
April 8 | 10 – 12 pm Monday
Brooks Enrichment Center

If you love taking photos with your iPhone but can’t figure out how to capture
anything more than simple snapshots and you’d like to take incredible photos
with the camera that you always have in your pocket, then this course is for
you. We discuss the features of the camera and how to use them properly
along with how to deal with the myriad ways to edit and organize your photos.

Alexander Hamilton and the American System of Political Economy
April 8 | 10:30 – 12 pm Monday
Naples Center / Online via Zoom

The nation’s first Treasury Secretary had a vision of a modern prospering
nation and set forth his plans in a series of reports to the U.S. Congress.
Several generations of Hamilton’s followers pursued those goals and trans-
formed the U.S. into the world’s leading economy by the end of the Civil War.
This lecture follows the Hamiltonian thread through the 19th and 20th centuries.

VENONA – Soviet Spies in America
April 8 | 1:30 – 3 pm Monday
Naples Center / Online via Zoom

During World War II and the Cold War, Soviet spies and operatives infiltrated
the White House, Treasury, State, DOJ, WAR and DOD. They also penetrated
our most guarded program, the Manhattan Project. Fortunately, the U.S. Army
had a top-secret counterintelligence project to decode Soviet Intelligence
messages. Most of the cryptanalysts were women at Arlington Hall, VA. VEN-
ONA was instrumental in identifying American spies. Many were committed
communists who were highly placed. We explore this program and its far-reach-
ing impact.

A Sliver of Gulf Coast Life: Birds, Seashells and Flora Along the Beach
April 9 | 10 – 11:30 am Tuesday
Naples Center / Online via Zoom

A beautiful and informative survey of the natural treasures on our doorstep
and a veritable digital museum of the wonderful biodiversity along our coast.
As we take our virtual stroll along the beach, the sound of waves in the back-
ground, we hear the voices of every bird encountered and see their variant
plumages. Shell and plant enthusiasts will be delighted to see images of color-
ful species adorning the surf and dunes of our beaches.

Fort Myers CRA seek visionaries to marry innovation and art to create Fort Myers’ Innovation Walk

The Fort Myers Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), invites creative minds from across the globe – visionaries, innovators, creators and futurists – to propose design concepts for engaging, transformational art installations to be built along the banks of the Caloosahatchee River in downtown Fort Myers.

The goal of Innovation Walk is to marry innovation with art, transforming and populating a meandering, mile-long waterfront park pathway with enduring installations and experiences that intrigue curiosity and celebrate human innovation. In its call for creators, the CRA seeks talented innovators, designers and creators to develop meaningful, durable and engaging installations that provide the pedestrian viewers with experiences stimulating critical contemplation, curiosity and hope.

“Innovation Walk, powered by the Edison Awards, builds upon the legacy of innovation in Lee County by building an enduring hardscape that will consist of three to five installations honoring multi-generational innovation icons,” said Michele Hylton-Terry, executive director for the Fort Myers CRA. “With that goal, we seek proposals that embody the spirit of innovation, resonate with the history and culture of Fort Myers, and lay down a path of insight, inspiration, discovery and possibility for generations to come.”

The project requirements focus on the previous work of the artists, their concepts, visual representations, construction plans, budget and timeline considerations. Given Southwest Florida’s extreme weather considerations, designs must be robust and capable of withstanding harsh conditions.

Proposals must be submitted electronically to [email protected] by May 2, 2024. Commissions will be awarded in May 2024 and the project must be designed, produced and installed within eight months of the award. The goal for full completion of the project is January 2025.

Contact [email protected] for more information.

ABOUT THE FORT MYERS COMMUNITY REDEVELOPMENT AGENCY (CRA)
Since 1984, the CRA has managed redevelopment trusts to revitalize blighted areas in the City of Fort Myers. This reinvestment can take the form of public infrastructure, residential and commercial grant programs, public arts, affordable housing development, safety initiatives and historic preservation.

If left under-resourced, parts of our city risk remaining overlooked, affecting community spirit, and slowing economic growth. This lack of redevelopment doesn’t just impact current residents—it also discourages potential new businesses and families from making our city their home. Imagine a city where every neighborhood is a beacon of growth and community spirit—a place where residents enjoy sustainable, thriving spaces and businesses benefit from a vibrant economic environment. This is the future we’re creating. The Fort Myers Community Redevelopment Agency was created in 1984 by the City of Fort Myers, Florida, under Florida Statute Chapter 163. The Fort Myers City Council members, sitting as the Community Redevelopment Agency Board of Commissioners, oversee the Agency’s programs and policies. The Fort Myers CRA office is located at 1400 Jackson Street in the historical downtown River District.
