About the Heights Foundation and the Heights Center
The Heights Foundation works to build self-sufficient families in the Harlem Heights neighborhood.  The mission is to support education and wellness, promote family and community development, and provide the benefits of enrichment and the arts.  The Heights Center, supported by The Heights Foundation, is a place for Education, Opportunity, and Enrichment.   GLAD Kids is a child care and pre-k center serving 90 children birth-five.  The Harlem Heights Community Charter School currently serves kindergarten through fourth grade and will expand to serve up to fifth grade for the 2020-2021 school year.
Harlem Heights was originally settled as a rural agricultural community.   Approximately 780 children live in a mixture of single-family homes and multi-family apartments. Demographically, the population is approximately 70% Hispanic, 20% African-American, and 8% Caucasian. The poverty rate for children in Harlem Heights is more than twice the county average, with family income 40% below the county average. Families are not able to easily access family support services located in downtown Fort Myers, and benefit greatly from programs located within the neighborhood.

Sailing Brings Peace-of-Mind & Freedom
No doubt, these are challenging and ever-changing times. Like all businesses in operation today, we are following all guidelines from the CDC in our office, classrooms at resorts, and aboard our fleet of boats. Sadly, admittance to the British Virgin Islands has been temporarily curtailed to all non-nationals. We are working directly with our clients affected by this situation. Our headquarters office is open to provide the highest level of customer service.
Our instructors and boats are ready and available for sailing and power catamaran instruction <https://lngc.maillist-manage.com/click.zc?od=2d5a885a69b60a972635e8bdbc171f0ba1185630859ca1fd0&repDgs=13698b777f9e52d7&linkDgs=13698b777f9defd8&mrd=13698b777f9dca73&m=1>  at our locations on Florida’s Gulf Coast <https://lngc.maillist-manage.com/click.zc?od=2d5a885a69b60a972635e8bdbc171f0ba1185630859ca1fd0&repDgs=13698b777f9e52d7&linkDgs=13698b777f9defda&mrd=13698b777f9dca73&m=1> . No crowds, just wind, water and wildlife to be enjoyed in the wide open spaces of Pine Island Sound and the Gulf of Mexico. We’re ready to teach in the British Virgin Islands the moment visitors are welcomed back.
As always, we instruct a maximum of four students (or five from the same family) aboard with an instructor. Our course schedules remain unchanged. In fact, we have extended our “Staycation” savings offer through April 17, 2020. Lake Okeechobee Conditions May Require Temporary Navigational Lock Closures to Protect Public Safety

Four locks on north shore of lake could be closed and hours restricted at fifth lock for safety if warranted by conditions
For boaters navigating to and from Lake Okeechobee, the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) may soon close four navigation locks on the north shore and reduce the operating hours of a fifth lock for safety reasons. Injury and lock damage could occur when boats pass through these structures when lake levels water are outside of designated safety limits.
As of March 19, 2020, Lake Okeechobee is 12.29 feet NGVD. The following north shore locks are required to close temporarily for safety reasons when the lake falls below 12 feet NGVD:

  • Martin County: S-135 boat lock, J&S Fish Camp
  • Okeechobee County: G-36 boat lock, Henry Creek
  • Glades County: S-127 boat lock, Buckhead Ridge
  • Glades County: S-131 boat lock, Lakeport

Also on the north shore, the operating hours for the S-193 boat lock at Taylor Creek in Okeechobee County could be reduced to Saturdays and Sundays between 5:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. if lake levels fall below 12 feet. The S-193 lock will close entirely if lake levels fall below 11 feet NGVD.
Locks would remain closed until lake levels reached at least 12.5 feet NGVD.
On the south shore, the S-310 lock at Clewiston in Hendry County will remain open. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages the locks leading from the lake to the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee rivers.

DINE SAFELY - DINE LOCAL (IN STORE, CURBSIDE OR DELIVERY) Kearns Restaurant Group to Stay Open and Safely Serve Their Community

FORT MYERS, Fla. — (Mar 18, 2020) – “In this time of need it is of the upmost importance for local businesses to support the community and vice versa. Together and only together we will overcome this successfully.  Currently COVID-19 is gravely impacting the lives in this community, and the livelihood of our employees and of many businesses.
As a local restaurant group with hundreds of employees in Lee County we are here to continue to provide safe food service for you, 7-days a week from 11am to 10pm in all our Stores (Capone’s Coal Fired Pizza, Cabos Cantina, The Lodge, Izzy’s’ Fish and Oyster, Ford’s Garage and the Boathouses Cape Coral and Fort Myers).
First: As of this week, for the safety of our guests and staff, all our restaurant have a 50% reduced seating capacity and 6’ ‘social distance seating’ in compliance with requirements by CDC and Governor Desantis. Additionally, all of our restaurants are being cleaned and maintained with a even stricter and ongoing cleaning regimen, above and beyond our already high standards, and in accordance with the latest guidance by the CDC & state regulations.
As required and for everyone’s safety we are also screening all staff daily, as required by Governor Desantis, and we have also enrolled our staff free of charge in a medical service that provides call in exams with doctors who can provide medical advice as needed in real time (Teladoc). That being said, there is zero evidence at this point of COVID-19 being transmitted through food, and our packaging is handled by trained staff with the utmost care.
While we will continue to offer top-notch service, drinks and food for dine-in customers, we are also updating our curb-side pickup and to-go / delivery offerings for guests, to make sure they have access to fresh ‘homecooked’ style meals in a healthy, safe, convenient and affordable manner. All Stores are now offering a new convenient curb-side pick-up option as of March 18th that can be ordered via our vendor. Contact Free Delivery is also available through Door Dash, Grub Hub and Uber Eats.
As we are here for the community, we also wanted to take the opportunity to let the community know that our locally based staff is working hard to provide for and protect this community, and to provide for their families in this difficult time. We are looking forward to serving you and to work alongside you.”
