Community Cooperative launches its ‘School’s Out, Hunger’s Not’ campaign

Community Cooperative launches its ‘School’s Out, Hunger’s Not’ campaign

Volunteers and donations are needed to continue Community Cooperative’s programs for the hungry and homeless through the summer.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 28, 2021) – Recognizing that hunger does not take a summer break, Community Cooperative is calling on community members to support its School’s Out, Hunger’s Not campaign. During the months of June, July and August, Community Cooperative is looking for additional volunteers and donations for its Sam’s Community Café & Kitchen, Community Market and mobile food pantries as well as volunteers to help deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound individuals. The increased need for emergency groceries each summer presents a unique challenge to Community Cooperative and its volunteers in these months as well.

“A decrease in summer volunteers is an issue we face annually,” said Tami Holliday, Community Cooperative’s community relations and development manager. “Nearly half of our volunteers are seasonal residents, so that leaves us with many open positions to fill each summer and into the fall. We are looking for helping hands that have time and talent to share.”

Community Cooperative is looking for local individuals, businesses, organizations, churches and community groups to support the School’s Out, Hunger’s Not campaign by hosting food drives, volunteering and giving financially. Food drives can range from simple collection days to engaging social donation events. Volunteers are needed in various areas, such as packaging and delivering meals for Meals on Wheels, serving lunch in the Sam’s Community Café & Kitchen, stocking pantry shelves, assisting clients at monthly mobile food pantries, and weeding and harvesting in the Able Garden.

For more resources and information on how to get involved, contact Holliday at [email protected] or call (239) 332-7687 ext. 125. Monetary donations are always welcomed and can be made directly on their website at CommunityCooperative.com, or mailed to: Community Cooperative, P.O. Box 2143, Fort Myers, FL 33902.

SFWMD Uses Innovative Technology to
Combat Blue-Green Algae in the Caloosahatchee River
SFWMD treating the Caloosahatchee River with Lake Guard Oxy, an innovative technology to remove algae from the Caloosahatchee River (C-43 Canal)
ALVA, Fla. – Today, the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), in partnership with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), began using an innovative technology treatment in the Caloosahatchee River to combat blue-green algal blooms.
“We are here because of the leadership of Governor Ron DeSantis, who listened to the people of Florida, and prioritized resources to protect South Florida’s waterways and address blue-green algae head-on,” said SFWMD Governing Board Chairman Chauncey Goss. “This is good news for Lee County and all of Southwest Florida, and we’re continuing to expeditiously implement long-term solutions, including the Caloosahatchee Reservoir, to better protect the Caloosahatchee Estuary.”
Improving water quality and reducing harmful discharges from Lake Okeechobee into the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie estuaries are top priorities for the State of Florida. Under the direction of Gov. DeSantis, SFWMD and DEP are expediting critical Everglades restoration projects such as the EAA Reservoir Project, the Caloosahatchee (C-43) and C-44 Reservoirs, and removing Old Tamiami Trail roadbed, which will all work together to reduce damaging discharges and send more clean water south to the Everglades.
DEP’s Blue-Green Algae Task Force recommended using innovative technologies to prevent, detect and address harmful algal blooms in a cost-effective, environmentally safe way. SFWMD and DEP are committed to a partnership that protects Florida’s water resources through multi-faceted and innovative solutions.
The blue-green algae in the Caloosahatchee River is being treated with a new technology known as Lake Guard Oxy. The algaecide product is certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and has shown promising results in other parts of Florida. Treatment is currently targeted at locations with active bloom conditions between the Wilson Pigott Bridge (SR 31) and the Alva Boat Ramp in Lee County. There are no water use restrictions associated with this product.
The South Florida Water Management District is a regional governmental agency that manages the water resources in the southern part of the state. It is the oldest and largest of the state’s five water management districts. Our mission is to safeguard and restore South Florida’s water resources and ecosystems, protect our communities from flooding, and meet the region’s water needs while connecting with the public and stakeholders.

It will be built on a 7.5-acre lot at the corner of Edison Avenue and Veronica S. Shoemaker Boulevard in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. redevelopment area. The project was approved for a tax increment rebate of $4.9 million by the CRA Board of Commissioners in December 2020. Hampton Inn by Hilton
“We are expecting very soon to proceed with the 2nd floor slab and masonry.”
– Eric Collin, LEED AP, Firmco Construction LLC, Developer
Progress is being made on construction of Hampton Inn by Hilton in the Downtown redevelopment area! AC by Marriott Hotel
“Our parking agreement was approved for City Council … this allows us to talk with potential leaders, which we are in the process of doing.”
– David Fry, First Street Place, LLC, Developer
The project will move forward with the building design presentation to the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) over the summer, provided the developer has favorable conversations with lenders and investors over the next 30-60 days. If this proceeds as planned, ground breaking on the project will occur by the end of 2021.
Silver Hills at Fort Myers
“The project continues to go well. Our building structure is complete and the garage will be complete in the next week or two.”
– Seth Mendelsohn, President, Silver Hills Development
The project is going quite well despite construction material shortages. The developer stated that some of the delays are related to coordinating and working with Florida Power & Light to remove power lines and install power to the site. Also, stucco has been completed in the courtyard and along the back of the building. No stucco has been worked along First Street. Phase I of the project is expected to be open or substantially complete around mid-July 2021.

This Downtown redevelopment area housing project was approved for a $9.535 million CRA tax increment rebate in December 2020.

We anticipate breaking ground in early 2022.”

Florida Skin Center Now Offering CO2 Laser Services

Florida Skin Center Now Offering CO2 Laser Services
Procedure Minimizes Wrinkles, Reduces Facial Scarring, Evens Out Skin Tone, and Increases Collagen
FORT MYERS, FL. (May 27, 2021,)- Florida Skin Center (FSC), skin care specialists that provide a full range of medical and cosmetic dermatological care, announced that it is now offering CO2 laser services.
The CO2 laser is used for skin resurfacing. Thin layers of skin are vaporized using a high-energy beam of laser light. This creates a “controlled injury” to the skin: as the skin heals, it produces collagen as a natural part of the healing process, which restores skin’s elasticity.  This treatment has less downtime compared to other laser treatments.
“CO2 laser resurfacing minimizes wrinkles, reduces facial scarring, evens out skin tone, and increases dermal collagen,” said Shirisha Vallarapu, PA.  “It is typically is more effective than other treatments like dermabrasion or micro-needling.  Our professionals customize the treatments with adjustments to laser strength, penetration depth, density, and patterns of treatment to address specific skin type and to achieve the goals most important to our clients.”
Recognized for two consecutive years by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) and Neutrogena® Choose Skin Health program as Top Screener for free skin checks, Florida Skin Center focuses on medical excellence and guest service. The Most Important Announcement We’ve Ever Made

The Southwest Florida Community Foundation is now, officially, Collaboratory.
And now, officially, up to something insanely daring.
Welcome to the greatest community problem-solving initiative in American history. Yes, we’ve changed our name from the Southwest Florida Community Foundation to Collaboratory. But we’re up to something much bigger than a name change. We’re actually putting our name on the line for the change we seek to achieve. It’s audacious.
We are committed to bringing Southwest Florida together to solve all of our major social problems on an eighteen-year deadline. You read that correctly. All of them. In eighteen years. Not alone, but with everyone. All ages, neighborhoods, beliefs, colors and imaginations. And we’re committed to building the infrastructure required to coordinate all of this at the scale and in the way NASA coordinated hundreds of thousands of people to get us to the moon in nine years. It will be the greatest community problem-solving initiative in American history.
Visit the new website. Learn all about it. Get a shiver up your spine.
